What goes on behind closed bathroom doors is something that most people don't want to talk about.
So it's no wonder that just about nobody admits to peeing in the shower.
But the fact is, according to a survey conducted by YouGov, 61 percent of Americans have peed in the shower. And I'm sure that in other countries, people tinkle in the shower in similar numbers.
But it's not as disgusting and dangerous as you might think...
Urine isn't bad for the body. On the contrary, there are several advantages to emptying your bladder while you're standing in the shower.
1. It's good for the environment
Every time you flush the toilet, six liters of water go down the drain. On average, we pee about seven times per day, which means that use approximately 42 liters of water to flush the toilet every day.
Peeing in the shower once a day could save a country like the UK about 140 billion liters of water a year. Pretty impressive, right?
2. It's a natural bathroom cleaner
Everyone who lives with guys knows that they sometimes sprinkle a few drops of pee in front of the toilet. And even though it's not dangerous, I'd rather not sit on the toilet and touch dried urine with my toes.
3. It's hygienic
When you wipe yourself down there, you're basically smearing everything around. It's not particularly clean, especially if you just did a number two.
So peeing in the shower might even save you from getting a urinary tract infection from poor wiping habits.
4. It saves money
If you don't pee on the toilet as often, you won't use as much toilet paper. You'll save time, something that tends to be scarce in the morning.
5. It's good for your skin
Urine contains urea, which is good for the skin and is a natural moisturizer. It's a common ingredient in skincare products but it's often produced synthetically.
Dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, M.D. of the Schweiger Dermatology Group says, "We already use urea, a component of urine, in a lot of skincare products. Urine is essentially mostly water—but a small percentage is urea."
So don't be shy! The next time you shower, take the opportunity to answer the call of nature and let your old prejudices go down the drain!
