Besides tasting delicious and waking us up, our morning cup of coffee has a number of other health benefits.

While not many people may know this, coffee can, among other things, reduce the risk of cancer and protect against Alzheimer’s.

And when you add three secret ingredients to your cup of joe, you can also jump-start your metabolism.

Several studies have shown that caffeine has an effect on the metabolism. In one American study, test subjects lost and average of 10 percent of their body weight after 22 weeks of consuming green coffee bean extract.

Although exercise goes hand in hand with a healthy diet, coffee can make the combination even better by improving the metabolism.

And your kitchen is probably already stocked with three secret ingredients that give coffee an extra kick.

Honey:

Honey isn’t just sweet and delicious—it’s also packed with natural sugar that energizes the body. Honey contains vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin C, iron, calcium, sodium, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, and a number of other important vitamins minerals that are known to speed up the metabolism.

Research has also shown that honey can reduce stress levels and relieve anxiety, as well as lower blood cholesterol.

Cinnamon:

Cinnamon has long been known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers have also found that cinnamon is rich in polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant.

But perhaps this is its best quality: the spice can speed up digestion and stabilize blood sugar, meaning that you won’t be hungry as soon as you usually are.

Coconut oil:

Coconut oil contains “medium-chain fatty acids,” which are ideal for speeding up the metabolism. They’re sent from the liver to the digestive system almost immediately after consumption.

Medium-chain fatty acids stimulate fat burning and ketone production in the body.

What you need to make your own super coffee:

6 oz (170 ml) coconut oil

1 tablespoon honey

1 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:

Mix the ingredients in a bowl and cover with a lid. Store the mixture in your refrigerator.

Use:

Add 1 teaspoon of the mixture into your coffee every morning. Be sure to mix well, and drink the whole cup!
