There’s a home remedy that’s helping people get rid of coughs and mucus in their lungs called a “honey wrap”—and it’s spreading like wildfire online as winter starts to set in.

Tons of people with throat problems have tested out the method and say it significantly reduces their symptoms or wipes them out completely. So what exactly is a honey wrap? It’s a honey-based pack that you put on your chest before going to bed. And when you wake up, you’ll be coughing less and breathing easier.

But why try honey wraps when there are proven cough medicines available at the pharmacy?

One reason honey wraps have become popular is that many cough medications contain dextromethorphan. This cough suppressant can lead to dizziness, upset stomachs, seizures, and hallucinations.

Another problematic ingredient is codeine, an analgesic drug that’s addictive and can cause breathing difficulties. Most places require a prescription for codeine, as it’s a narcotic, but cough syrup with codeine and dextromethorphan is still sold in some countries, which might be helpful to keep in mind.

Directions:

Mix a teaspoon of flour with a little honey. Then, warm the coconut oil on the stove and add it to the mixture. Smear the liquid on a napkin and apply it to the chest. Finally, secure the patch with tape.

Adults should wear this honey wrap overnight, and children should put it on a few hours before going to bed and take it off before going to sleep. Repeat the process daily until the symptoms disappear.
