Jennifer Hudson dazzled fans this past weekend at the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary special, but though she gave her usual, phenomenal vocal performance, it was her hairstyle that appeared to really get people talking.

We know what you’re thinking: A-list celebrity flaunts new hair for snazzy awards ceremony, what’s the big deal? Well, the buzz around Hudson’s do didn’t actually focus on fans dissecting some crazy new look or color that the singer had adopted for the evening.

Rather, fans of the 43-year-old stated their belief that she’d shaved her hair completely off. Now, we’re more than sure she’d look amazing anyway – this is Jennifer Hudson we’re talking about – but in actual fact she hasn’t gone “bald”, contrary to what a lot of people were writing on social media.

Sunday night (October 6) marked the 50th anniversary of the American Music Awards, and featured performances from icons including Mariah Carey, Nelly, and Nile Rogers.

A lot of talk surrounding the event had to do with fans confused as to why no current artists were recognized during the ceremony. The answer to that is simple: the regular AMAs have been pushed back until March 2025. Sunday’s offering was – as titled – an anniversary special, intended to pay tribute to the awards’ 50 years as an important piece of the music industry scene.

And the surprises didn’t stop there. 43-year-old Jennifer Hudson peaked the interest of many fans thanks to her appearance.

The Dreamgirls star donned a sleek, shiny figure-hugging gown for the occasion, accentuating her figure and absolutely emanating grace.

One video from the event that proved particular popular online saw Hudson welcoming Mariah Carey to the AMA stage. Hudson’s appearance in that clip prompted all manner of online comments, with social media users reacting to the fact that they believed she’d shaved off her hair.

“Not me thinking she went bald 😫 although she would look stunning 🤩,” one person wrote on Instagram.

Another replied on the same comment: “Same. But it suits her. Of she ever does [sic].”

A third chimed: “me too 😣 I thought I was the only one haha 😆 until i saw the pony tail [sic].”

“Why I thought Miss Hudson was bald? It would look good though I see,” a fourth wrote.

A fifth commenter added: “Jen I thought u went bald for a min..🤭

“Lord thank God […] she didn’t go bald,” wrote a sixth. Another person wrote: “I thought she was rocking the bald look.”

Fans of course may remember that Hudson did actually sport a bald look back in 2015. At the time, the singer shared a selfie to her Instagram with her hair slicked back, captioning the image: “Who needs hair, when u serving face!”

Needless to say, the real talking point from Hudson’s appearance at the AMAs should have been around her rendition of “I Will Always Love You” – the hit made famous by Whitney Houston in the 1992 movie The Bodyguard.

Before her stunning performance, Hudson was asked about her connection to the late Whitney, answering: “What is my connection to Whitney Houston? I think the gospel, you know, the presence, a gift. It just touched me at a [sic] early age. I don’t think I can recall a time that I didn’t know of Whitney.”
