It was a terrifying situation that one teenager and a 6-year-old boy found themselves in while outside their own homes on a quiet street in Conroe, Texas.
Grant Brown didn’t hesitate when he saw a dog attacking a 6-year-old boy who had been pushed to the ground.
Mason Lindeman was playing in his driveway with two other children when the dog came from nowhere and knocked him to the ground, attacking him.
The whole horrific attack was caught on camera and the video shows the two other children running away while Mason lies on the floor with the dog over him.
But 19-year-old Grant Brown heard his screams and didn’t hesitate to run over and help the boy.
“As soon as I noticed I just ran over there without thinking, I didn’t know how, I knew I just had to get the dog off the boy,” he told KPRC-2 Houston.
His leap into action meant the aggressive dog then turned on Grant and video shows the Houston teen running as the dog chases him.
“I look back, my shoes came off and I tripped and fell, the dog was on top of me before I knew it. I knew I had to keep his mouth away from me,” Grant said, whose hand was injured in the attack.
The brave teen’s action meant the injured 6-year-old could run away.
“All I could see was Mason running up to me holding the back of his head and there’s blood running down and everything,” Mason’s mom Jillian told KPRC-2 Houston.
Mason was bit on the back of his head and had to have staples as well as suffering bruising to the face.
Mason’s mom will be eternally grateful to the teen who saved her son: “I just want to give the guy a hug, there’s nothing I can do other than say thank you,” she added.
The dog was surrendered to animal control officers.
Grant was recognized for his heroic efforts and honored in a ceremony attended by the local mayor and Conroe Police Chief Jeff Cristy.
Awarding Grant with a check for $1,500 Cristy described Grant’s actions as a “heroic act of valor.” Mason’s dad Police Officer James Lindeman also thanked Grant and said they were “absolutely blessed” he was there.
Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson said it was an “absolute honor” that they were able to recognize this brave teen.
“Mr. Brown selflessly put himself between him and that child,” he added, as per The Courier newspaper.
I think this teen deserves all the praise; to see him in action running into such a dangerous situation to save a child is a true act of heroism.
