Newborn has life-saving leg amputation after nurse’s mistake

Getting ready to welcome your babies into the world is an exciting time for so many parents and we hope that the nurses at the hospital will have the infants best interest at heart.

But in cases like this, a nurse was negligent to the needs of a baby under their care…

The extreme neglect of nurses taking care of premature babies in a hospital in China has come to light after one baby lost his leg because of it.

The four-day-old baby had been born premature at 36 weeks and had to stay in a neonatal incubator for a week.

After he was given a shower a nurse then used a hair dryer to dry him and two other babies but stepped away leaving the hair dryer on.

It was an hour and half before he was attended to and by that time had sustained burns on his left leg so severe it had to be amputated in order to save his life, according to the Daily Mail citing reports.

The hair dryer was left by one nurse who went to do other tasks in the room, according to the British newspaper citing CCTV footage released by Chinese television station Henan Metropolitan News Channel

Two nurses have been fired from the hospital following the incident which was only noticed when a doctor came into the room.

The two other babies being blow dried at the time suffered minor burns, according to the Daily Mail.

Paid attention to the babies

The baby’s skin was so burnt it had cracked. The baby’s father has told Henan Metropolitan News Channel: “If she (the nurse) had paid attention to the babies and quickly removed the hair dryer from them, he (my son) would have only suffered minor burns.”

Hospital management has issued a public apology and agreed to cover 610,000 yuan ($88,000) medical expenses for the baby but the family have refused the offer.

The incident took place on December 14, 2017, at Xincai Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital in Zhumadian city but has only been made public recently by a local broadcaster.

Such a terrible case of neglect that so many people will now have to live with for the rest of their lives.

I hope the family finds peace and the baby involved grows up to live a full and happy life.
