Todd Chrisley and Julie Chrisley have earned most of their acclaim through their reality television show. But now they are making headlines for all the wrong reasons… being convicted for fraud.
Todd Chrisley and Julie Chrisley star in the hit reality television show about their family. The show is titled “Chrisley Knows Best” and shows us inside the life of the real estate tycoon’s life with his wife and children.
Todd Chrisley claims to have made a majority of his fortune by investing in real estate but in 2012, he filed for bankrutpcy citing that he had lost most of the money he had made.
The tenth season of their show “Chrisley Knows Best” is set to return to screens at the end of June. But the family is currently embroiled in a legal issue that might lead to imprisonment for the Chrisley family patriarch in particular.
Both husband and wife have been found guilty on all counts brought against them in their 3-week trial. The 53-year-old reality star Todd Chrisley and his 49-year-old wife Julie have been found guilty of onspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States and tax fraud. Julie Chrisley has also been found guilty on another count of wire fraud. The sentencing date for this conviction has not yet been scheduled but it is speculated that the couple could get as much as 30 years in jail!
The couples’ lawyer Bruce Morris told media that the couple was disappointed in the verdict and that they are planning an appeal.
The accusations included the fact that the couple forged false documents to secure $30 million in bank loans to foot the bill for their lavish lifestyle and then later declared bankruptcy to avoid paying the loans back.
Prosecurtors said the couple intentionally “swindled” smaller banks to make up the $30 million bill between the years of 2007 and 2012 – two years before their hit show debuted.
The prosecutors also sought to prove that the couple were dishonest about the millions of dollars they made through their show “Chrisley Knows Best” and also about $500,000 they owed in taxes since 2009. They were also accused of setting upn a shell company under Julie’s name called 7C’s Productions in order to avoid the IRS seizing the taxes they had owed.
In October 2019, the couple was cleared for any tax evasion charges in their state of Georgia but still face charges for avoiding federal tax.
The show is set to return soon, and we will be able to see whether they address this trial in the episodes.
