A firefighter from Galveston, Texas has been confirmed as the father of two children who died in a house fire at the weekend.
According to tragic reports, Dustin Jones tried desperately to rescue his daughter, Jade Jones, 3, and his son, Logan Jones, 2, after a fire broke out at their home around 2:35 a.m. on Saturday.
Dustin, a firefighter with the Galveston Fire Department, had managed to escape the house when the fire broke out, before attempting to go back in to save his children.
As per Click2Houston, he and neighbors fought to gain access to the building, but were beaten back by heavy smoke and flames.
Warren Mies, a navy veteran and neighbor of the Jones family, said he was alerted to the fire when someone banged on his door. He and some Army veteran friends tried to crawl inside the burning home to get to Jade and Logan, but authorities told them to stay back.
“[The neighbor] yelled, ‘call for help, the house is on fire. The kids are inside,’” Warren recalled.
“Trying to get inside the window because we asked my neighbor, ‘what room are the kids in?’”
Over 20 firefighters responded to the scene. They were able to recover Jade and Logan from a back bedroom, though both children were pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital.
A memorial has appeared outside the Jones home, where well-wishers are placing teddy bears, flowers and children’s toys. According to reports, Dustin’s father, grandfather of Jade and Logan, is also a firefighter.
My heart breaks to hear this tragic tale. I can only imagine the pain and anguish Dustin and the rest of his family must be feeling.
