Tina Turner, legendary singer and songwriter, passed away yesterday aged 83, leaving the music industry in mourning.
According to a statement obtained by Rolling Stone, the Queen of Rock’n Roll “died peacefully” after a “long illness” at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.
The tragic news was also confirmed on her social media channels, with a statement released reading:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”
Naturally, any number of tributes have flooded the internet in the wake of the announcement. Though Turner’s passing came after she endured years of health issues, the death of such a monumental figure and icon to millions was always going to spark an outpouring of grief.
According to reports in Radar Online, the What’s Love Got To Do With It singer had accepted the fact that her days were numbered, and began the process of settling her estate in 2021.
Turner, whose estate at the time of her death was said to be worth as much as $270 million, is believed to have been desperate to get her affairs in order so as to as to avoid any possible family in-fighting over the fortune she would leave behind.
Following the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s passing, it’s hardly a surprise that Turner’s name is dominating headlines the world over today. There’s much and more to be found on the late singer’s life, but perhaps most interesting is the alleged final interview she ever gave.
Last month, on April 8, The Guardian newspaper published what is said to be Turner’s last interview, in which she discussed topics including her greatest fear, her celebrity crush, and, fittingly, how she would like to be remembered.
“I never want to go back; I fought so much through my life, that I have to keep going forward,” Turner told the publication when asked what her greatest fear was.
As for what made her most unhappy, the 83-year-old replied: “I have lost people close to me, too soon.”
Later in the interview, Turner was asked what scared her about getting older, to which she answered: “Nothing. This is life’s full adventure and I embrace and accept every day with what it brings.”
The (Simply) The Best singer also revealed that she’d always had a thing for Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, detailing: “I always had a crush on Mick Jagger. I loved when we toured with the Rolling Stones.”
Yet perhaps most fitting of all was her reply when asked how she wanted to be remembered.
“As the Queen of Rock’n’Roll,” Turner said. “As a woman who showed other women that it is OK to strive for success on their own terms.”
Sadly, the singer experienced a number of tragic set-backs over the last decade. She fought intestinal cancer, before undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017.
In 2018, her oldest son, Craig Turner, died by suicide at the age of 59. Earlier this year, another of her children, Ronnie, passed away after suffering a medical emergency at his home in San Fernando Valley.
“Ronnie, you left the world far too early. In sorrow I close my eyes and think of you, my beloved son,” Turner said.
Rest in peace, Tina Turner.
