Tina Turner, known to millions as the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’, passed away earlier this week at the age of 83.
The legendary singer-songwriter had endured with a raft of health problems over the past few years, including cancer, a stroke, and kidney failure, but remained upbeat and positive until the bitter end.
“With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow,” a statement on social media announced on Wednesday.
“Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music.”
While the (Simply) The Best singer’s death may have seemed sudden – it was not preceded by any information indicating that her passing was imminent – new reports from Radar Online suggest Turner knew her time was coming.
Radar say that Turner had endeavored to settle all matters relating to her estate over the last few years so as to avoid any family in-fighting over the fortune she would leave behind.
Turner experienced a number of tragic set-backs over the last decade. She fought intestinal cancer before undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017. On top of that, she had to deal with the death of her son, Craig Turner, who died by suicide in 2017, as well as the passing of another of her children, Ronnie, in late 2022.
Tina herself is said to have left this world “peacefully” at her home in Küsnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland.
Given her ailing health and advanced years, it’s perhaps not too surprising that Turner’s public appearances and social media posts ground to a halt in recent years. The What’s Love Got to Do With It singer appeared to take a firm step away from the limelight to enjoy her remaining time with husband Erwin Bach.
In fact, one has to go back to 2021 to find her last photo post to Twitter, which many are labeling a fitting final image for a woman who inspired so many people around the world after overcoming the odds to become a music phenomenon.
At the time, Tina, the documentary to celebrate her life, had just been released, and it was a production the icon herself seemed to be very satisfied with.
Taking to Twitter, Turner posed before a huge TV screen as she watched the documentary from the comfort of her home. She captioned the photo: “I am so excited to share this movie with you – seeing the concert scenes made me relive some of the proudest moments of my life.
“I simply had to sing along and dance around my living room.”
Turner, who moved to Switzerland and renounced her US citizenship after becoming a Swiss citizen, was reportedly last seen in public in November 2019 while attending the Broadway premier of the stage musical about her life, also named Tina.
In late 2021, she made a pre-recorded appearance to mark her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist.
“If they’re still giving me awards at 81, I must have done something right” Tina said at the time. “I’m very happy to have this and to achieved this.”
I think I speak for everyone when I say we’re going to miss Tina greatly. Such an inspiring role model for millions, and a truly unparalleled musical talent.
