James Cameron is doing something he doesn’t ordinarily do: responding to “offensive rumors in the media.”
The film director is publicly condemning any rumors that he’s planning to make a film about the Titanic-bound submersible that suffered a “catastrophic implosion.”
“I don’t respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now,” the director and deep-sea explorer tweeted. “I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be.”
Last month following the Titan submersible’s disappearance, Cameron sat for many interviews discussing the fate of the vessel.
“The only scenario that I could come up with in my mind that could account for that was an implosion – a shock wave event so powerful that it actually took out a secondary system that has its own pressure vessel and its own battery power supply, which is the transponder that the (mother) ship uses to track where the sub is,” Cameron told Anderson Cooper.
The director is seen as an expert in the field. Not only is he responsible for the 1997 film Titanic, but he has completed more than 30 dives to the Titanic wreckage.
He also dove to the Mariana Trench, considered to be one of the deepest spots in the ocean – about seven miles below the surface.
Despite the horrific tragedy, Cameron said he hopes it doesn’t discourage people from continuing to explore the ocean.
“I’m not worried about exploration, because explorers will go,” Cameron said. “I’m worried that it has a negative impact on, let’s say, citizen explorers, tourists. … These are serious people with serious curiosity willing to put serious money down to go to these interesting places – and I don’t want to discourage that.”
