Woman’s viral TikTok about paying family members to babysit sparks internet debate

Kaitlyn Wilson’s TikTok about receiving pay for babysitting a relative’s child is the latest video from the social media site to go viral.

The most shocking part of the clip was not that the young woman babysat for free, but that most in the comments agreed on one thing.

Keep reading to find out if you agree.

In the video Wilson explains how she recently told her situation to someone who couldn’t believe the arrangement she had with her sister.

“I was telling somebody the other day that I watch my nephew for my sister, once a week roughly or just whenever she needs, and they were so shocked that I did it for free,” Wilson said.

“Like, are other people’s families out here charging them to watch their kids for a few hours? That’s absolutely absurd if they are.”

Wilson found it just as absurd that someone would expect to be paid because in her mind, “I get the opportunity to create a relationship with my nephew by babysitting him and being around him.”

“The fact that other people feel like they would need to be paid to hang out with their nieces, nephews, grandkids … is so messed up.”

“I feel like it’s not that hard to show up for and support people in your family, especially if you live near them,” Wilson said.

I was not even aware that someone would think of charging their family member for babysitting their kid(s) occasionally #fyp #family #ittakesavillage #nephew #auntlife

Perhaps most shockingly, the majority of people in the comments were in agreement with Wilson.

“My mom, sisters and mother-in-law would throw themselves into oncoming traffic before accepting payment for watching my son.”

“Is it really babysitting? Or is it just spending time with family? It’s just spending time for me.”

“It’s not even just that it’s my nephew, it’s that that’s my SISTER. Like why would I ask my sister to pay me for a favor? She would do the same for me.”

“For real. Time with my niece is my favorite like I’d be willing to pay my sister to leave the house so I can get some auntie & niece time ?”

“I babysit my best friends kids all the time and I would never let her pay me, those are my babies too lol”

What are your thoughts? If you babysit a relative’s child should you be paid for your time? Let us know what you think.
