Children who end up in foster care have gone through a lot by the time they land in their first foster home. So it’s no wonder that they’re often depressed, anxious, and angry. And it’s a difficult situation for everyone involved, which is why things don’t always work out between foster children and parents. Sadly, this results in many children moving from one foster home to the next, when the thing that they really desire is love and stability.
Nathanael Matanick’s short film “ReMoved” put this heartbreaking situation on vivid display. The film follows a young girl (played brilliantly by 14-year-old Abby White) as she’s taken from her family when her father’s abuse becomes too much. She then struggles to deal with the issues that arise in her life as she lives with a series foster parents. The film is as captivating as it is heartbreaking.
And while it sometimes feels like all hope is lost, there’s light at the end of the tunnel when Zoe gets a surprise that restores some joy to her life. The Santa Barbara Independent writes: “It would be impossible to fully understand the life and emotions of a child going through the foster care system, but this short narrative film portrays that saga in a poetic light, with brushes of fear, anger, sadness, and a tiny bit of hope.”
