Former President Jimmy Carter reportedly told his son James Earl “Chip” Carter III that he has one goal, and shockingly it doesn’t have anything to do with his upcoming milestone birthday on October 1.
According to the former president’s grandson, Jason Carter, the 99-year-old plans to live until at least he’s able to vote in the presidential election. Early voting in Georgia begins October 15.
“I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris,” Jason Carter recalled his grandfather telling his father Chip.
Jason Carter told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that in recent days his grandfather has been “more alert and interested in politics and the war in Gaza.”
In May, Jason Carter provided the media with an update on his grandfather’s health, and the future seemed grim.
“He has been in hospice, as you know, for almost a year and a half now, and he really is, I think, coming to the end that, as I’ve said before, there’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him, and there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end and I think he has been there in that space.”
The 99-year-old entered hospice in February 2023 after a series of hospital stays. He is a survivor of metastatic brain cancer and liver cancer. He also underwent brain surgery after a fall in 2019.
Comments about voting for Harris came after Chip Carter asked his father if he was trying to make it to his 100th birthday.
The former peanut farmer expressed more excitement about voting for Harris than celebrating his milestone birthday.
However, his 100th birthday won’t go unnoticed. Plenty of celebrations have already been scheduled.
A concert at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta will be held September 17 to raise funds for the Carter Center, a free film festival will also be held in Atlanta on September 28, and a 100-mile community bike ride will take place in Sumter County on September 28.
I hope Jimmy Carter continues to remain healthy enough to accomplish his next goal. Please continue to pray for our former president.
