Opinion: It’s okay to use disposable tableware for Thanksgiving

There’s nothing quite like finishing Thanksgiving dinner with family, only to spend the next hour standing at the kitchen sink doing dishes while everyone else relaxes and watches football.

What a joke! No one enjoys the clean up after a nice meal.

Recently, I came across a conversation a wife had with her husband. She wanted to use disposable tableware for Thanksgiving, while he preferred regular dishes. In his mind, using paper plates was “lazy.”

It got me—and hundreds of others—thinking: are paper plates for Thanksgiving really so bad?

I’m just going to come out and say it—no, they’re not.

While reading the comments online, I noticed numerous people questioning the quality of the disposable tableware.

“With soggy food like gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, noodles, cranberry sauce…paper just won’t hold up. You may end up with messes more difficult to clean up.”

But here’s the thing: there are plenty of durable options for disposable plates. I’m not talking about the flimsy plates you find at pizza shops. You can find sturdy, high-quality disposable tableware that can hold all the turkey, stuffing, and gravy you could ever need.

Environmental concerns aside, paper plates are not lazy, they’re the epitome of convenience.

Since there are no official “rules” one must follow when serving a Thanksgiving dinner, it shouldn’t matter what type of plate you use to serve your meal. The important thing is that your guests have something to eat on.

Once you’re finished with your meal, rather than stack the dishes in the sink or load them into the dishwasher, just toss them in the trash. Why add the burden of washing dishes when you already have to wash the bulky cookware?

While your prized china may look nicer than disposable tableware, if you have a larger gathering, it may be more cost effective to serve dinner on paper plates instead of purchasing or renting more dishware.

Disposable plates are also lightweight, making them easier for young children to handle. Plus, they’re perfect for those who’d rather enjoy their turkey dinner in front of the TV.

And if you’re concerned about the environmental impact, there are plenty of sustainable options to choose from.

If using paper plates helps you spend even just a little more time enjoying the holiday with your family and less time washing the dishes, why not give them a try?
