Melania Trump will change many things when she moves back into the White House for her husband’s second presidential term. The soon-to-be FirstLady has again laid out her ideas for the four coming years in Washington but has also confirmed that she won’t live there full-time.
Her and Donald’s son, Barron Trump, has enrolled at New York University; therefore, Melania wants to support her son in the best way possible. While the schedule may get a little tricky moving forward, Melania and Donald’s marriage remains – in so far as reports allow – strong.
Rumors about the strength of their bond have been rumbling for a decade, and one body language expert claimed that Melania didn’t even look happy on Election night when the results were in.
Donald and Melania had their fair share of arguments when they lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue the first time around. Now, the Slovenian-born model has decided to reveal new details about her marriage to Donald, with perhaps set to cause some problems at the White House.
The pair met in the 1990s. At that time, Melania was a well-known model, with she and Donald encountering one another for the first time during an event at the Kit Cat Club. The wealthy real-estate mogul had just divorced his second wife, Marla Maples, and came to the event with a date. However, when he saw Melania, he wanted to get to know her instead.
“I went crazy. I was actually supposed to meet somebody else. There was this great supermodel sitting next to Melania,” Donald Trump told Larry King in 2005. “They said, ‘Look, there’s so and so.’ I said, ‘Forget about her. Who is the one on the left? And it was Melania.”
However, when they first met, Melania was not interested. Since Trump was there with someone else and still asked her for her phone number, she admitted being “turned off” and said he was “totally out of the question,” her best friend Edit Molnar said.
Donald Trump & Melania Trump marriage
“Melania said, ‘He’s here with a woman. I am absolutely not giving him my number,’” Molnar recalled. “She wouldn’t even consider it. Donald did all the work.”
“He wanted my number,” Melania told Tatler. “But he was on a date, so of course I didn’t give it to him. I said, ‘I am not giving you my number; give me yours and I will call you.’ If I give him my number, I’m just one of the women he calls.”
In an interview with Fox News, Melania explained that she and Donald had their first date in New Jersey after she had returned from a modeling shoot in the Caribbean. The couple drove together for an hour and a half to Bedford, New Jersey, where Donald Trump viewed a property he wanted to buy.
“So he was combining business with taking [me] on a first date. And it was very nice, because we were two of us alone in the car for an hour, hour and a half, and it’s no other noise, no other people, because at that time, he was already known and a celebrity,” Melania told Fox.
She continued: “So it was really nice to be just two of us.”
However, the recollection of their early romance has different stories. In 2016, speaking with Harper’s Bazaar, Melania said the couple went for dinner on their first date, which ended at a New York Restaurant and lounge called Moomba. At the time, the spot was packed with celebrities.
“It was a great place, wasn’t it? I remember that night like it was two months ago,” she told the Magazine.
Why Melania Trump renegotiated her prenuptial agreement
Eventually, Donald and Melania began their famous relationship. The couple married in 2005 at the Bethesda-By-the-Sea Church in Palm Beach, Florida. Donald and Melania’s marriage has always been a big talking point in the media. Like any other couple, they have endured their fair share of challenges and rough periods. Last year, with Donald involved in several legal battles, Melania took a first step to ensure that she and Barron would be covered if things went south.
According to Page Six, Melania spent 2022 renegotiating the terms of her prenuptial agreement with Donald. In November 2023, the source said her new “postnup” was in place. The news outlet reported that Melania wanted the new deal because she was worried about how much money would be left for her and Barron after legal bills, damages, and possible fines were paid.
“This agreement was necessary because of the current legal battles.[Donald] has suffered,” a source told Page Six, adding that the renegotiated prenup will “provide a more solid future” for Melania and Barron if the couple would go separate ways.
“It’s not that she threatened to leave him. It’s definitely the underlying idea.”
A person familiar with the renegotiated prenup told Page Six that Melania wanted the deal to provide her with money and property. It included cash, where there is a “specific amount at minimum that Barron is supposed to obtain.”
Melania showed “no real happiness” at election night
Moreover, another source told the news outlet: “This is at least the third time Melania has renegotiated the terms of her martial agreement.”
In typical fashion, Donald has thus far managed to keep himself out of any major legal trouble, and last fall won the 2024 Presidential Election. Melania was at first reluctant to return to the White House, but in 2024, she changed her stance, saying she would be interested in a second term as First Lady at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. However, a body language expert claimed that wasn’t exactly radiating happiness after her husband had won.
When Donald and Melania appeared on stage to celebrate the election win with their fans late on election night, the two shared a big hug and exchanged a kiss. While many saw it as a beautiful moment, one body language expert was not convinced. Darren Stanton stated that Melania was reluctant to walk to her husband on stage, claiming there was “no closeness.”
“When Trump looks back at Melania and gestures to her to come over for a hug, she reluctantly comes forward,” Stanton said. “It’s very disjointed and awkward, and there’s no emotion from her. We don’t see any genuine smiles from Melania, it feels like a smile she has adopted for the occasion.”
Stanton continued: “There’s not the level of emotion you’d expect given her husband has just been elected president. It’s all quite contrived, she’s just reluctant to show any emotion, there’s no real happiness or joy. There’s always an awkwardness with Melania.”
Melania ‘revealed’ secret about her long marriage
Even so, the union marriage between Donald and Melania seems to be stronger than ever. And maybe that’s because she knows why his two previous marriages failed. According to the tell-all book Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady, Melania’s former friend and Met Gala producer Stephanie Winston Wolkoff revealed a new side of the former first lady.
As revealed in the book, Melania had some pretty strong opinions of Donald Trump’s former wives Ivana and Marla Maples – and why they failed their husband. According to Wolkoff, Melania was asked why she didn’t use the “Trump” name to promote her different beauty brands. And according to the former first lady, she didn’t even consider it.
“She was very well aware of what he wanted — and didn’t want — in his third wife. He wasn’t the kind of husband who cheered on his wife’s career,” Wolkoff wrote in her book. “Melania told me the secret of her long marriage to him is that she is completely different from his other wives.”
Melania believed that Ivana Trump and Marla Maples pressured their former husband, which is why their marriages ended in divorce.
“Unlike Marla Maples, Donald’s first wife, who ran one of his Atlantic City casinos and sold jewelry and clothes on QVC for a decade, Melania didn’t pressure Donald for things to do,” Wolkoff wrote.
Donald Trump lashed out at his wife over jacket incident
While Donald and his wife seem to have an agreeable relationship, during their first term at the White House, the two didn’t always see eye-to-eye, which caused some friction. In her book I’ll Take Your Questions Now, Stephanie Grisham, who worked for Melania’s office during the first Trump presidential term, revealed several details about Donald Trump’s tenure at the White House.
Grisham recalled one specific moment when Trump exploded at his wife. On her way to a migrant housing facility in Texas, Melania wore a jacket with the text “’I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’
Grisham wrote that she didn’t notice the message on Melania’s jacket. At the time, Trump and his administration were under heavy criticism because of their policy of separating migrant children from their family members.
Melania’s visit was seen as a good opportunity for the administration to form a better image on the issue. In the end, they actually abandoned the program. When Melania came back from Texas, the President was furious. Donald is said to have summoned his wife to the Oval Office and yelled at her over the wearing of the tasteless jacket.
“He yelled and asked “what the [expletive]” they thought they were doing,” Grisham wrote in her memoir, as reported by The Washington Post.
Melania later spoke about the jacket in an interview with CNN.
“It’s obvious I didn’t wear the jacket for the children,” she said. “I wore the jacket to go on the plane and off the plane. And it was for the people and for the left-wing media who are criticizing me.”
Melania Trump says Donald doesn’t always listen to her
So, how is Donald and Melania’s marriage today? This past Tuesday, Melania appeared on Fox & Friends to give some insight into her and Donald’s marriage and what to expect when they enter the White House for a second time.
“Maybe some people they see me as just the wife of the president, but I’m standing on my own to fit, independent. I have my own thoughts, I have my own yes and no. I don’t always agree what my husband is saying or doing, and that’s okay,” Melania added.
In recent months, several reports have suggested that Melania wouldn’t live at the White House all year around. In an interview with Time Magazine to celebrate Donald becoming Time Person of the Year, the former and future president stated that Melania would be at the White House a lot.
Speaking with Fox, Melania confirmed her husband’s words – but also said that being first lady won’t be her only priority in the second term. Their son, Barron, began studying at Stern Business School at New York University last year, which is one of the reasons why she will not only be staying at the White House, but also in New York to support her son.
“I will be in the White House, and when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach, but my first priority is to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife,” she told Fox.
