Prince Harry’s move to the US with Meghan Markle in 2020 made it possible for the estranged prince to pursue a life entirely different from the royal one he was used to.
He duly wasted no time at all in jumping into action. The Oprah interview and his book, Spare, propelled Harry into many a headline, causing friction with other members of the British Royal Family, as well as members of the public. In his memoir, Harry accused his relatives of many things – and even went after his brother William, including comments about his older brother’s appearance.
Harry mocked his brother’s hair loss, which now has backfired. Over the years, the Duke has shown signs of losing his own hair, and now, one former friend has even suggested that it’s time to shave it completely off. If you ask me, a recently-taken picture might prove that he should.
Harry has been locked in a battle with the Royal Family for years. It all began when he and his wife, Meghan Markle, decided to appear in a now-infamous Oprah Winfrey interview around a year after their royal exit. When Harry released his memoir, Spare, it became clear that the Duke would pull no punches in the fight.
Not only had Harry decided to speak out – and receive money to do so – against his family, but simply sharing information on that level has historically been something that members of British monarchy haven’t been permitted to do. In Spare, Harry touched upon many topics, including how his father didn’t hug him when Princess Diana died, labeling Camilla his “wicked stepmother,” and going at his brother, Prince William, over a number of issues. Harry also mocked his brother for losing his hair.
In his memoir, Harry recalled the moment after the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Philip, when he noticed how William’s physical appearance had changed a lot in recent years. One thing he noticed especially? William’s baldness, which Harry branded “alarming.”
“I looked at Willy, really looked at him, maybe for the first time since we were boys. I took it all in: his familiar scowl, which had always been his default in dealings with me, his alarming baldness, more advanced than my own; his famous resemblance to Mummy, which was fading with time,” Harry wrote.
Harry received both praise and criticism for what he wrote in Spare. Many deemed the outburst at his family unacceptable, while the fact that he dubbed his brother his “archnemesis” didn’t land well with some.
Prince Harry has ‘gotten hair transplant,’ says expert
The many things he said about his brother in his book were brought up when Harry did a 60 Minutes interview with Andersson Cooper.
“I don’t see it as cutting at all,” he said of William’s hair loss. My brother and I love each other. I love him deeply,” Harry said, adding that there has been “a lot of pain” between the two siblings.
While Harry may have mocked his brother for losing his hair, it’s now gotten to a point where it seems that the estranged prince is traversing the same road.
Over the years, the Duke has shown signs of losing his hair, and there have even been rumors about him possibly getting a hair transplant. Two hair transplant clinics have written articles about Harry, his hair loss, and a possible hair transplant in recent years. So, has he gotten a replacement? According to the UK site HairPalace, he has “likely” not.
“While in certain pictures we can see some improvement in his density, the evidence is inconsistent,” the site wrote. “In some pictures, his hair looks great, but there’s always a follow-up picture just months later where his hair loss is back again.”
Further, the Wimpole Clinic stated: “It’s highly unlikely that the younger prince underwent a hair transplant, but he is most likely on an alternative treatment. The three most commonly used treatments for hair loss other than a hair transplant are minoxidil, finasteride and PRP therapy. Finasteride is an oral prescription medication that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This often halts the progression of hair loss and promotes regrowth in some cases.”
“The prince is most likely utilizing this treatment”
“However, it’s most effective in the earliest stages of hair loss. Minoxidil is an over-the-counter topical treatment that’s believed to prolong the hair’s growth phase. The increased blood supply can increase hair health and lead to stronger and enhanced hair growth. While both of these medications can yield results, neither of them offers a permanent solution as they have to be used indefinitely.”
The clinic concluded: “PRP treatment involves drawing a patient’s blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting it into the scalp. It’s believed that the growth factors in PRP can stimulate the hair follicles and promote hair growth. The main issue with PRP is the need for regular follow-up treatments to maintain any results. However, the temporary hair growth seen in Harry’s case suggests that the prince is most likely utilizing this treatment. Although it’s difficult to say for sure without any confirmation from the man himself.”
Though Harry might not have received a hair transplant, it’s safe to say that he is losing his hair. William has already lost his, and hair loss runs in the family. Both his father, King Charles, and his grandfather, Prince Philip, suffered from hair loss, so it’s not a giant surprise to expect Harry to lose his as well. According to Spex Hari founder Spencer Stevenson, other factors could be in play.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Stevenson claimed that Harry’s balding could be caused by stress generated by his public rift with his family and estrangement from his father and brother.
“Due to the high amount of stress he must’ve been through in recent years dealing with all the exposure surrounding him and his life, it will have definitely negatively impacted his hair,” Stevenson said. “Definitely, the relationship with his estranged family is not helping on top of male pattern baldness.”
Prince Harry branded “pathetic” after new-look photo
Prince Harry has never tried to hide his baldness with a cap or a hat. But recently, some have argued that the estranged prince is trying to do something to hide the fact that he is losing his hair in pictures.
BetterUp, a mental health start-up that the Duke of Sussex has been a part of, posted a new shot of the Prince for their leadership page in 2023, and it quickly garnered many reactions online. It appeared that he had thicker, darker hair than was shown in pictures just days before, with both royal fans and experts called him out.
“Photoshop does wonders for the hairline. Male pattern boldness is not something you can change without, a hair transplant, wig or in this case photoshop,” one user wrote on X.
Royal expert and biographer Angela Levin spoke to GB News about the then-newly published picture. Just days before, the expert had said that there were signs the “old” Harry was back, as he looked happy and relaxed. But as she saw the allegedly altered image, she branded him “pathetic.”
“It’s so that he looks more attractive,” she told GB News. “We all know he’s lost his hair, and we know he was very rude about William, who lost his hair before Harry because he is older.”
Levin added: “He has made lots of silly jokes about him and he did that in his book, Spare, but now he has got it, but he can’t have photos of that. So he’s darkened his hair and painted a bit on top. It’s pathetic.”
New Prince Harry photo shows Harry’s big bald patch
Harry has explored many business ventures with his wife since their move to the US. The couple made millions through their Netflix and Spotify deals—the latter of which was canceled—but for Harry, his passion project, The Invictus Games, has stayed closest to his heart.
This year the games, arranged in Vancouver, Canada, are for veterans to compete in sporting events and, per their website, “support the recovery and rehabilitation of international wounded injured and sick service personnel and veterans through sport.”
Prince Harry has always prioritized the Invictus Games and its events, and as this year’s games were held in Canada, he made sure to be there for as long as possible. During the closing ceremony, the Duke gave an emotional speech thanking all athletes for their hard work and inspiring stories.
“To those of you whose journey to these Games has been difficult and uncertain, who questioned whether you would even make it here today, thank you for showing us what is possible,” he said. In the pursuit of saving yourselves, you have also saved all of us. Those who love you and those who don’t even know you.”
“Being a hero, being a role model, it’s not just about resilience, skill or power. It’s about integrity. Compassion. Courage,” Harry continued. “You give us hope through your healing, honesty, and humanity, and of course through your humor! You know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s an in-house joke. Our entire Invictus community, whether here tonight or watching from home, is making the world a better place, and you’re doing it by being your awesome selves.”
Prince Harry’s former hairdresser urges him to shave off his hair
Although his appearance and speech were praised and reported worldwide, people reacted to more than just them. Pictures of Harry from behind showed the bald spot on the back of his head growing in size.
Of course, Harry should retain the hair he has left if he wants to. Nonetheless, an old pal of the Duke has now spoken out, urging Harry to cut his losses and shave it off.
On Instagram, Sam McKnight MBE, who previously worked for Princess Diana and Harry as his hairdresser, stated that Harry once had “thick healthy crowning glories” like his mother. However, now, he believes it’s about time Harry decided to remove what is left.
“It’s time Harry! Many moons ago, when you and your brother were young boys, you both had the most magnificent, thick healthy crowning glories, just like mum. ‘Many an afternoon was spent with me thinning and shaping the topiary!” McKnight wrote, per the The Sun.
“However, just like myself, the lush hedging is no more, a mere wisp or two of its former self. All is not lost, however, a good short clip at the barbers (like your big brother has done recently) would look sharp and clean, and take years off that handsome face.”
“From one baldy to another, it’s time”
The hairdresser continued: “If I were your age I’d go for a transplant, so much more natural these days, unlike the plug plants of yore. And no need for a quick EasyJet trip to Turkey, you’re in California where they have the best! ‘So Harry, from one baldy to another, it’s time. As they say in Disneyland, ‘Let It Go.'”
Sam McKnight ended the caption on Instagram, “Sent from your old hairdresser, Sam, with love, a wink and a smile.”
