I don’t know about you, but I like to think that when I’m too old to care for myself there will be kind souls willing to attend to me to ensure my comfort.
It’s not uncommon practise for us to trust the care of our loved ones to professionals when they get to a certain age. Though we’d love to be there every hour of the day to see to their every need, in many instances it’s just not practical. So, instead, they’re placed under the eye of carers.
These selfless people are usually excellent when it comes to ensuring that elderly people are cared for in a dignified manner that lets them know they’re not being forgotten about simply because they’re no longer to do things they once more.
Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. One horrifying recent example can be found in Italy, where two women were arrested for subjecting a 75-year-old woman to physical and psychological abuse. The footage, released by police, is distressing, to say the least.
Italian police confirmed on March 10 that they had arrested two people in the city of Trapani, Sicily. The duo – both female careworkers – had been recorded in the process of abusing an elderly lady in their care.
The women, aged 36 and 53, both hit and threatened the 75-year-old, who, according to reports, was sick and bedridden.
At one point in the video, one of the carers appears to spit in the old lady’s food, with the covert footage managing to pick up the whole thing before police broke into the building to put the offenders in custody.
According to the police, the victim would scream when she was being subjected to the abuse – which occurred when they were changing personal linen and feeding her – but none of the neighbours had ever called the authorities.

Of course, the victim was taken straight to the Hospital of Trapani once her abusers were arrested. She’s since been assigned to a protected residence.
Personally, stories like this make me sick to my stomach. Why would anyone look to harm a defenceless 75-year-old purely for their own entertainment?
