Donald Trump has been known to give nicknames to all of his “enemies.” Crooked Hillary and Sleepy Joe Biden are two he’s used frequently, and there are a lot more when looking back over the years. But in fact, Donald Trump has also been given nicknames. One is the same as a soccer player – and it’s not for a charming reason.
Donald Trump has been known to use nicknames for those he doesn’t like. Hillary Clinton has been called “Crooked Hillary,” former President Joe Biden was nicknamed “Sleepy Joe,” and the 2024 Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley was nicknamed “Birdbrain” after a 2023 debate.
There are many more names Trump has used. For example, California Governor Gavin Newsom was called Governor Newscum by the president. Bernie Sanders was given the nickname “Crazy Bernie,” and the Democratic candidate for Vice President, Kamala Harris, was referred to as “Tampon Tim” by Trump.
Well, these names are, of course, not lovely, and many have questioned if it’s really worthy of a president to call people these kinds of things. However, Donald Trump has also been called names, and one of them may be a term that people are not familiar with. It is about his golf game – and the way he reportedly cheats.
But first, let’s take a look at how this name has even become a thing. Donald Trump loves golf, and already during his presidential term, he is said to have hit the links more than 40 times.
Donald Trump accused of cheating on the golf course
Many have criticized the President of the United States for heading to the golf course during times of concern. For example, Trump went to play golf when the markets were crashing over his tariff policy in April.
As late as July 14, in the middle of the controversial Jeffrey Epstein saga where MAGA supporters turned on the president for not wanting to release the Epstein files, accusing him of withholding information, Donald decided to go golfing and, meanwhile, bragged about winning the club championship on his golf course in Jupiter, Florida.
Donald Trump has revealed himself as the winner of several golf club championships. Somehow, he has managed to win them all, including the Senior Club Championship in April. In January, he said he won another; however, the Palm Beach Post reported that “nobody saw him play.”
So, is Donald Trump really being honest? Well, there has even been a book about him and his golf by author Rick Reilly, titled “Commander in Cheat.” Obviously, it implies that Donald Trump is, in fact, cheating on the golf course – and many have said the same thing.
“He has to win and he will do anything to cheat”
Last year, Rick Reilly, who’s also a sportswriter, appeared on Deadline White House on MSNBC, breaking down how Donald Trump cheats on the golf course.
“I’ve always said golf is like bicycle shorts. It reveals a lot about a guy,” Reilly said. “And what it reveals about this guy is that he cannot lose. He has to win and he will do anything to cheat.”
Reilly added, “And I know because I played golf with him and he took seven mulligans. He took a ‘give me chip-in. I’ve never even heard of a ‘give me chip-in.”
Speaking with People Magazine in 2024, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung denied Reilly’s claim that Donald was cheating on the golf course.
“Rick fantasizes about having a golf game as good as President Trump. But instead of putting in the hard work to improve his s—ty game, Rick allows his severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome to completely take over his life. He should seek urgent medical care before it’s too late.”
However, Reilly had many more stories to tell. The author and sportswriter stated that Trump had won tournaments even though he wasn’t “in the state when the tournament’s played,” and also reportedly won a tournament in North Korea during his talks with Kim Jong Un.
Reilly continued, saying, “What he does [is] he just calls in and goes, ‘I usually beat that guy, give me the trophy. And I know this because when I play with him, he goes, ‘You know what I do to win these championships, don’t ya?’ and I go, ‘Please tell me. Give it to me.’ And he goes, ‘Anytime I buy a new course, I play the first round all by myself and then I declare myself the club champion. So that’s what kind of guy this is.”
‘Kicks the ball into good position’
The author stated that Trump has “never won a championship at a course he doesn’t own and operate,” despite the president claiming to have won 23.
“I don’t know anything about politics, but I know about golf,” Rielly concluded. “I’ve covered it for about 45 years. It’s not a sport where you can cheat. It’s just not in the game.”
Reilly isn’t the only one claiming that Donald Trump is cheating on the golf course. Jack O’Donnell was the vice president of Trump Plaza Casino in Atlantic City for four years, with his father being one of the founders of the iconic Sawgrass golf course in Florida.
“My dad always told us to respect the game,” O’Donnell told Golf.com. “That’s the one part of the game that tells me what kind of person you are. You play the ball where it lies.”
One time, O’Donnell’s office colleague, the late Mark Eddis, came back after playing his first round of golf with Trump. Jack asked if Donald had improved the golf balls’ position on the course. Eddie looked at him, laughing, “Every shot but the tee shot.”
Rick Rielly wrote at Golf.com that Donald Trump “cheats like a three-card Monte dealer,” and that he” ‘throws, boots and moves’ the ball. The sportswriter claimed Trump “lies about his lies.”
Donald Trump nicknamed “Pele” by golf club workers because of his cheating
At the golf club Winged Foot, where Trump is a member, the caddies, those who help carry the players’ clubs, have gotten so used to seeing him kick his ball back onto the fairway that they even came up with a nickname for him. It was “Pele,” after the legendary Brazilian football player, whom Donald Trump actually said was his favorite player.
“I played with him once,” Bryan Marsal, longtime Winged Foot member and chair of the 2020 Men’s U.S. Open, told Golf.com. “It was a Saturday morning game. We go to the first tee and he couldn’t have been nicer. But then he said, ‘You see those two guys? They cheat. See me? I cheat. And I expect you to cheat because we’re going to beat those two guys today.'”
Marsal added, “So, yes, it’s true, he’s going to cheat you. But I think Donald, in his heart of hearts, believes that you’re gonna cheat him, too. So if it’s the same, if everybody’s cheating, he doesn’t see it as really cheating.”
