Eric Dane’s harrowing words in final public appearance before his death

Eric Dane has died. The beloved Grey’s Anatomy star passed away on Thursday, February 19, after battling ALS. In December last year, he made his final public appearance, where he shared the heartbreaking truth about his disease.

In a statement to People Magazine, Eric Dane’s family confirmed that the beloved actor had died at the age of 53. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, last year.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement read. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always,” the statement continued. “Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Eric Dane’s painful words in last ever public appearance

Eric Dane was very outspoken about his battle with ALS. Back in December 2025, Dane joined a virtual Giving Tuesday panel with I AM ALS and Synapticure, which would become his last public appearance.

He spoke openly and honestly about what his life was really like.

“I have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time, on any given day, I don’t think anybody would blame me if I went upstairs in my bedroom, crawled under the sheets, and spent the next two weeks crying,” he said. “And I was a little bit pleasantly surprised when I realized that I wasn’t built like that, because I thought for sure that was gonna be me.”

At the time, Dane had just finished filming Brilliant Minds, where he played a patient living with ALS. The role was painfully close to home. He admitted it was hard to separate himself from the character, but he also described the experience as “cathartic.”

Dane stated that staying positive was an important factor, even in the face of something so devastating. He said it was “very encouraging” to discover that strength within himself – and he never stopped fighting.

Survived by his wife and two daughters

“I make sure that people are aware of what ALS is and what it’s about, and more importantly, what we can do to combat it… because it’s so rocky,” he said, while also pointing out the “hurdles and bureaucracy” that slow progress.

Even in the darkest moments, Dane chose to raise awareness and help others — a fight he carried on until the very end. He died on February 19, at the age of 53. Eric Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14.

Rest in peace, Eric Dane.
