College baseball player with well-known last name dies near stadium in Virginia

What began as an ordinary week on campus ended in tragedy for the Radford University community.

A promising young athlete with a well-known last name is now being remembered in sorrow rather than celebrated for his talent.

A sudden and shocking loss

Radford University in Virginia is mourning the loss of freshman baseball player Joey Raccuia, whose life was cut tragically short last Wednesday.

The promising athlete died just four days he made his collegiate debut.

Authorities confirmed the incident occurred not far from Radford’s baseball stadium, a place that had quickly become a second home for Raccuia.

According to The Roanoke Times, police and rescue personnel rushed to the scene, but the 19-year-old Joey was pronounced dead on arrival.

A heartfelt tribute from Radford baseball

Images of Joey show a determined young athlete, fully focused on the game.

One photo captures him mid-stride on the field, glove in hand, in his navy Radford uniform. Another shows him smiling warmly in a red Highlanders jersey and navy cap, highlighting the blend of intensity on the field and kindness off it.

Radford’s baseball program shared a touching tribute on Instagram, featuring a memorial graphic of Joey in his red Highlanders jersey, glove ready, with the words: “IN LOVING MEMORY JOEY RACCUIA.”

Radford Athletics

In their statement, the team wrote:

”We are heartbroken to share news of the passing of Joey Raccuia. Joey’s impact on our team, this community and all the lives he touched went far beyond the playing field, and we miss him deeply.”

The tragic details

As more information comes out, the heartbreak grows. Joey wasn’t just any freshman athlete, he was the son of former Radford University Head Baseball Coach Joe Raccuia, making his presence on the team deeply personal.

Joey’s father, Joe Raccuia, is also a Radford alumnus and former team captain from the 1995 season, when the team set a school record with 30 wins, according to Radford University.

Currently, Joe serves in a dual role with the MLB’s Kansas City Royals. He floats ”between scouting and player development while working with newly drafted players as they enter the organization,” according to a feature on the team’s website.

Joey’s life was cut short in a car accident on Thursday, February 26, 2026, mere miles from the Highlanders’ baseball stadium, according to People.

At just 19 years old, he had already made his mark as a versatile middle infielder and right-handed pitcher, leaving an impact that extended far beyond statistics.

A community forever changed

The accident’s proximity to the stadium adds a haunting note, as the field where he played will now forever carry a different meaning for many.

Despite his brief time, Joey built a legacy rooted in family, community, and love for the game. His presence, both on and off the field, will not be forgotten.

Just days following the tragic death of the Radford freshman, his teammates honored him on the field with a thrilling ninth-inning comeback, defeating Bryant 5-4 on a walk-off hit.

“(Raccuia) was clearly with us today,” head coach Alex Guerra said on the team’s website. “There’s absolutely no question about it. If you don’t believe in a higher power, you better start believing after that. It was fate.”
