You’ve probably noticed — just like I did — that Catherine, Princess of Wales is looking noticeably more blonde these days.
The change hasn’t gone unnoticed. Many are calling it her “boldest transformation yet.”
Now, the Princess of Wales is finally addressing the change and revealing why her hair has shifted so much over the past year.
When Kate Middleton stepped out with noticeably lighter hair in 2025, fans immediately started asking questions.
The Princess of Wales has changed her style over the years, but this was one of the biggest hair transformations people had seen from her — and it quickly sparked both praise and criticism online.
Not long after debuting the lighter look, Kate appeared to return to her familiar brunette shade, which only fueled more speculation. Now, she has finally addressed what might have caused the change.
Kate’s explanation
The topic came up during the Royal Variety Performance in November 2025, when Kate was speaking backstage with actress Su Pollard, according to Daily Mail.
After Pollard mentioned the princess’s lighter hair, Kate responded simply:
“It used to be brown, but it’s gone light in the sunshine.”

Kate had first been seen with the noticeably lighter color in August, shortly after returning from a summer holiday in Greece with Prince William and their children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
The family spent time sailing near the Greek island of Kefalonia, a sunny destination sometimes called the “St. Tropez of Greece.”
Experts aren’t entirely convinced
Some hair experts say the sun alone probably isn’t the full explanation.
Creative color expert Seung Ki Baek told the Daily Mail:
“Lightening the hair in the sun can occur over time, but the effect is often less dramatic than for those with a naturally lighter base.”
In other words, sunlight can lighten hair — but the transformation might not happen quite as dramatically without some help.
Celebrity stylist Sarah Gadston suggested that Kate’s vacation could still have played a role.
“After a sun-soaked holiday in Greece, Kate returned not only with a refreshed spirit but also with naturally lightened hair,” Gadston said.
“The combination of sea air, sunshine, and saltwater had gently lifted her hair to a softer shade—creating the perfect starting point for her next salon visit.”
She added that going lighter can also be a practical choice as people age.
“Rather than covering grays with darker dyes—which often require more frequent maintenance—she’s opted for a lighter, blended tone,” Gadston explained.
“This approach not only gives her hair a softer, more natural appearance but also helps camouflage grays in a subtle, low-maintenance way.”
Mixed reactions online
When Kate first appeared with the lighter color during a visit to the Natural History Museum, the change quickly became a topic of discussion.
Some people loved the look. Beauty editor Melanie Macleod even described it as “Sleeping Beauty” hair.
“When you say ‘princess hair’, this is exactly what I picture,” she said.
“Long, tumbling Sleeping Beauty style curls in a golden hue.”
Others were less impressed. Critics said the blonde shade “washes her out,” with one commenter writing: “Chestnut brown looks lovely on her. Not a fan of the blonde.”

Still, many fans defended the princess, praising her confidence and style. One supporter wrote: “I think her hair is sensational.” Another added: “Beautiful even blonde.”
The change in style also comes after some difficult years for Kate. In 2025, she revealed she had been undergoing treatment after a cancer diagnosis before later announcing she was in remission.
Since then, the Princess of Wales has been gradually returning to public duties while focusing more on family life.
