Donald Trump is facing backlash after revealing a Congressman’s private terminal heart condition.
The shocking misstep came during an impromptu press conference on Monday, where Trump was set to address his ongoing disputes with Iran ahead of a meeting with Kennedy Centre board members.
The President began by praising House Speaker Mike Johnson for maintaining his majority despite a two-thirds vote margin. But the conversation quickly shifted to the health of a Republican colleague.
Revealed Neal Dunn’s heart condition on live television
On live television, Trump asked Johnson about Republican Representative Neal Dunn, 73, who was “very ill.” Johnson responded that Dunn had faced “real health challenges” following a “pretty grim diagnosis,” according to Tyla. He praised Dunn for continuing his work, calling him a “real champion and a patriot.”
Trump, seemingly unaware that Dunn’s condition had not been widely publicized, pressed further, prompting Johnson to reveal that Dunn had received “a terminal diagnosis.” The President then said: “He would be dead by June.”
Johnson replied: “Ok, that wasn’t public. It was grim – that was what I was going to say.”
He added that Trump had recently reached out to Dunn and arranged treatment through doctors from the White House Medical Unit and Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre. “The man has a new lease on life,” Johnson said.
“He acts like he’s 30 years younger, and he walked into the conference meeting, and we thought we’d seen a ghost, and I spoke with him over the weekend, and he’s encouraged and thankful, and he thanks the President for his leadership and intervention.”
“This is one of the most disgusting things he’s done”
Trump continued discussing the case, recounting that he had learned from Johnson that Dunn’s situation was “terminal” and that “nothing they could do” had been expected.
“I realised I have doctors in the White House,” he said. “The White House, doctors are incredible, and they’ve helped me with other people. They’re helping me with people right now, people that are very sick… like they’re miracle workers.
“And I said, I have to call them. And I called the two doctors, they’re both great. And they immediately went over to see the congressman, and he was on the operating table, like two hours later.”
The incident has been widely criticized. According to Tyla, one Reddit user wrote: “Narcissistic sociopath. Smiling whilst discussing someone’s (not yet publicly announced) terminal diagnosis and framing it about how their death would impact his control over the house. Truly disgusting.”
Another added: “This is one of the most disgusting things he’s done. How terrible,” and a third person commented: “As a nurse, revealing someone else’s very private health information like this, so cavalierly, made me want to vomit.”
