Urgent warning to throw away ‘squishy dumpling’ immediately if it has certain smell

“Squishy dumplings” are taking over TikTok. But now, parents are being warned about counterfeit versions of the viral collectible toys.

Kids, teens, and young adults have been flooding social media with videos of themselves opening miniature plastic dim sum containers, hoping to find one of the rare glitter versions hidden inside.

Retailers have rushed to keep the toys on shelves as demand continues to grow. But officials are now warning consumers to take a closer look at exactly what they’re buying.

The concern isn’t centered on the original toys created by RMS International. Instead, authorities are issuing warnings about counterfeit versions that have flooded the market.

Last month, Swansea Council issued a public warning urging parents to throw away dumpling squishies that give off a strong chemical odor resembling gasoline.

“Serious dangers to anyone using or playing with them”

According to the council, testing carried out on a number of seized counterfeit toys found that several contained volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including Ethyl Benzene, Styrene, m-Xylene, p-Xylene and o-Xylene.

“When a toy gives off a strong chemical smell and is missing basic safety information, that should ring alarm bells for parents and retailers alike,” Swansea Council Trading Standards Officer Rhys Harries warned, according to LADbible.

“Our main concern is the risk posed to children if unsafe items end up in homes, school bags or play areas.”

Officials in Scotland have also raised concerns.

Earlier this month, Trading Standards officers with Glasgow City Council seized nearly 6,000 counterfeit dumpling toys from a warehouse in the city.

“The items which have been recovered pose serious dangers to anyone using or playing with them,” said Laura Doherty, Glasgow city councillor and convener for Neighbourhood Services and Assets.

According to officials, the counterfeit toys may pose several health risks, including headaches, nausea, breathing difficulties and skin irritation. Some could also present a choking hazard for younger children.

As concerns over counterfeit versions continue to grow, parents are being encouraged to inspect the packaging on any dumpling toys they purchase. According to LADbible, legitimate RMS products should include:

  • UKCA or CE safety certification markings
  • Age restrictions
  • Safety warnings and instructions
  • Manufacturer information
