A man who paid just $500 for an abandoned storage unit discovered a safe containing $7.5 million in cash in it.
Dan Dotson, an auctioneer best known from the TV show Storage Wars, revealed that a family friend had purchased one of the units he had previously auctioned.
Instead of the usual assortment of old furniture and forgotten belongings, the buyer found a safe. When they opened it, they made the incredible discovesy of $7.5 million.
The phone call that changed everything
The new owner’s windfall did not last long. Shortly after the discovery, a lawyer representing the original owners of the safe made contact and offered $600,000 in exchange for the return of the money. When that was turned down, the offer was raised to $1.2 million.
The buyer ultimately accepted the deal and handed the $7.5 million back.
According to Dotson, accepting the offer may have been the smartest move, not just financially, but for personal safety.
The question of why someone had stashed millions of dollars in cash inside an abandoned storage unit was never fully answered, and the implications of that uncertainty were not lost on the buyer.
Storage facilities are legally permitted to auction off units when customers fall significantly behind on payments. Buyers bid without knowing what is inside, making every purchase a gamble.
Most units contain ordinary household items and old furniture. Occasionally something valuable turns up – $7.5 million in cash is, maybe once in a million.
