The sudden death of actress Hayden Panettiere has left fans and the entertainment world stunned, as authorities continue investigating what happened to the 36-year-old star.
Panettiere, best known for Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday, August 16. Her representatives have confirmed her death.
Police say no foul play is suspected
According to the Greenville Police Department, officers were called to the residence at around 1:50 p.m. after an acquaintance contacted 911. Emergency responders attempted to provide medical assistance, but Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have said their preliminary findings do not indicate foul play or suspicious circumstances. The Greenville Police Department is working with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office as the investigation continues, and Panettiere’s official cause of death has not yet been released.
Kasey Kitchen, a representative for the actress, said authorities were still working to establish what happened: “There’s an investigation ongoing. We should know more tomorrow.”
Panettiere had reportedly traveled from Los Angeles to Greenville just one day before her death, making the sudden loss even more shocking.
Her father, Skip Panettiere, remembered his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought “immeasurable love and joy” to those around her and to the millions who watched her on screen. He also asked for privacy as the family comes to terms with the devastating loss.
Hayden Panettiere began working in entertainment as a child and went on to become one of television’s most recognizable young stars, rising to international fame as Claire Bennet on Heroes before starring as Juliette Barnes on Nashville. She also appeared in Remember the Titans, Scream 4 and Scream 6.

Hayden’s personal life often unfolded under intense public scrutiny, but in recent years she became increasingly candid about the challenges she had faced. In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she reflected on growing up in the spotlight, motherhood, her struggles and recovery, and the devastating loss of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere.
Jansen died in 2023 at just 28, a loss that deeply affected Hayden. She later opened up about the grief and guilt she carried after his death.
Hayden was also a mother to her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with her former fiancé, professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
