He was once Gwen Stefani’s little blonde-haired boy, growing up in the spotlight alongside two famous rock stars.
Today, Zuma Rossdale is a bearded 18-year-old with a guitar in his hands — and a future in music that is already turning heads.
Gwen Stefani isn’t just a world-famous superstar with millions in the bank and a massive fan base — she’s a mom, too. Recently, she singer celebrated her son’s 18th birthday with a touching collection of photos and videos spanning his childhood to today.
The transformation was striking, but there was something else fans couldn’t help noticing.
As Zuma has grown older, he hasn’t simply inherited his parents’ love of music. He has developed a sound and style of his own, one that leans heavily into country and the Western lifestyle.
And that has made his connection with his famous stepfather, Blake Shelton, even more interesting.
From Rock-Star Baby to Young Musician
Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale was born on August 21, 2008, to Gwen Stefani and Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale. With a No Doubt singer for a mother and a rock star for a father, music was always part of his world.
But his interest in performing appeared remarkably early.
When Zuma was only 3, the “Hollaback Girl” hitmaker already had a pretty good idea of what kind of personality her son had. Gwen Stefani described him as a natural entertainer who loved being the center of attention.
“[Zuma] wants everyone to watch him, and he’s a goofball and he’s really silly,” she said. “He’s a funny guy.”
When Zuma was just four, Gwen revealed that he would regularly pick up a guitar and play alongside members of No Doubt.
Over the years, however, his musical interests began taking a very different direction.
Instead of following directly in his parents’ rock footsteps, Zuma became increasingly drawn to country music, cowboy culture, guitars and life in Oklahoma.
And then Blake Shelton entered the picture.
Blake Shelton became an important part
Gwen and Blake married in 2021, and the country superstar quickly embraced his role in the lives of her three sons.
Blake has spoken openly about how much the boys changed his perspective on life.
”They’ve taught me something about myself that I never knew: I’m more than just a country singer or a goofy guy,” Blake told People. ”I’m someone they actually lean on, and that’s not a responsibility that I ever had and not something that I ever considered even being into.”
For Zuma, the relationship appears to have been especially meaningful.
The teenager developed a deep love for country music, and one particularly sentimental gift from Blake showed just how close the two had become.
Blake eventually restored an old truck that had belonged to his late father, Dick Shelton, and gave it to Zuma. Zuma even named the truck Dorothy, after Blake’s mother. It was a gift that carried far more meaning than simply handing a teenager the keys to a vehicle.
Then Zuma stepped onto the stage
In July 2024, Zuma stepped into the spotlight in a way that surprised many fans. The teenager made his stage debut at Blake Shelton’s Ole Red venue in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, where his proud stepfather introduced him to the crowd.
Zuma then picked up his guitar and performed a cover of Zach Bryan’s “Oklahoma Smokeshow.” A fan-recorded video captured Blake watching from nearby, his face lighting up with an unmistakably proud smile.
It was a memorable father-and-son moment, and perhaps the first real glimpse that Zuma wasn’t just following in his family’s musical footsteps.
He was beginning to carve out a musical path of his own.
And fans soon noticed something else.
Photos of Zuma standing alongside Blake sparked a wave of comments from people convinced the teenager was starting to resemble his famous stepfather.
One person wrote, “The one with glasses looks like he could be Blake.”
Another said, “The 15 year old actual could pass for his son! I am very happy for your family! [sic]”
A third commenter asked, “Why does the middle child look like he could be Blake’s Son [sic]?”
Someone else joked, “His son on the right is Blake’s ‘mini me’!”
Of course, there is no biological explanation for the resemblance. Zuma is Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani’s son.
Zuma’s bond with his biological father appears to be strong.
On Zuma’s 16th birthday, he shared the stage with his dad, Gavin Rossdale, during a Bush concert in New Jersey, turning the milestone into a memory he would likely never forget.
Gavin even surprised his son with balloons and a birthday cake onstage as the crowd joined in the celebration.
“It was so incredible to celebrate Zuma’s 16th birthday with 18,000 people screaming happy birthday,” the proud dad told People.
Now he’s 18 — and looks different
Of course, watching a child grow up and change over the years is one of the most natural things in the world. But Gwen Stefani’s tribute for Zuma’s 18th birthday offered a particularly touching reminder of just how quickly the years can fly by.
“Happiest 18th birthday Zuma 🤍 i cannot believe u are 18 today!! watching u grow into the sweetest + most talented young man has been one of the greatest gifts of my life 🥰 we love u soooo much Zuma ❤️❤️❤️❤️ [sic],” she wrote.
And looking at the young man Zuma has become, it’s easy to understand why she was feeling emotional. The little boy fans remember has grown into a confident young man with a beard, a guitar and a very clear passion for music.
His social media appearances show him wearing cowboy hats, playing guitar and embracing a country-inspired style that feels worlds away from the little boy once photographed beside his famous parents.
On his 18th birthday, his girlfriend, Theran Rose, reportedly gave him a Fender Telecaster. Zuma thanked her warmly, calling her “Beautiful” and saying the guitar would be part of many future adventures and memories.
Naturally, fans once again brought up Blake.
One commenter wrote, “I see a mix of Gavin and Blake, which is obviously does not make sense. lol. Best of luck, Zumba and gf!! [sic].”
Another simply observed, “Wow, you do resemble Blake in this picture [sic].”
Whether fans see Gavin, Gwen, Blake — or a little bit of all three — one thing is becoming increasingly clear.
Zuma isn’t just growing up. He’s finding his own identity.
And at 18, with a guitar in his hands, a love of country music and famous musicians on both sides of his family, this young man may just have a very interesting musical future ahead of him!
