The world was in shock when Princess Diana died. However, the late princess’s brother, Earl Spencer, has now made a new harrowing claim about King Charles’ reaction. According to him, Charles was not sad, but somewhat the opposite.
At around 12:23 a.m. on August 31, 1997, Princess Diana’s life came to an end. The car carrying Diana and her boyfriend, Egyptian-born film producer Dodi Fayed, crashed inside the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris, France.
The couple left the Ritz Hotel with their driver, Henri Paul, and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones. Paparazzi were following them when the Mercedes crashed at high speed.
Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul died at the scene. Rees-Jones, the only other person in the car, survived. Diana was still alive, and medics spent precious minutes treating her at the scene. But she suffered a cardiac arrest inside the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
At 2:06 a.m., Diana arrived at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where doctors quickly discovered the extent of her injuries. X-rays showed she had suffered severe internal injuries, and she was immediately given a blood transfusion.
Just 15 minutes after arriving, Diana suffered another cardiac arrest. Surgeon MonSef Dahman led the desperate effort to save her life. He performed emergency surgery, but despite everything the medical team tried, Diana’s heart would not restart.
“The thought that you have lost an important person, for whom you cared personally, marks you for life,” Dahman said years later about the heartbreaking night.
The death of Princess Diana
The doctors tried electric shocks several times and performed cardiac massage in a desperate attempt to bring Diana back. But her injuries were too severe.
Dahman said the hospital was one of France’s leading centers for treating serious emergencies, and that saving patients made him feel “happy and proud.”
With Diana, he initially believed there was still hope.
Sadly, that hope would not last. While doctors in Paris fought desperately to save the beloved princess, her two young sons were far away at Balmoral in Scotland.
Prince William and Prince Harry were staying with their father, King Charles, and their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, unaware of the full tragedy unfolding in Paris. In the end, the two young princes lost their mother.
Meanwhile, Diana’s mother, who was alive at the time, lost a daughter, and her brother, Earl Spencer, lost a sister. On September 6, 1997, Princess Diana was laid to her final rest.

An estimated 2.5 billion people watched the funeral, and viewers saw how the two young children, William and Harry, walked behind their mother’s coffin in the cortége.
The world mourned the late Princess of Wales, also known as “The People’s Princess.” While the Royal Family wanted nothing to do with her after the divorce, she would still always be a part of it.
Meanwhile, King Charles’ affair with Camilla was already public knowledge. The divorce with Diana was finalized a year before her death.
Diana has remained a major part of the Royal Family, even after her death. Now, a new, shocking claim has emerged as Diana’s brother releases a new book.
Earl Spencer’s forthcoming book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, is set to be released next week. An excerpt of the book has already seen the light of day, with some explosive claims about Diana’s death.
Now, in a new excerpt published by the Daily Mail, Earl Spencer makes the harrowing claim that King Charles allegedly had an “elated” reaction to her death.
“Unlike my other callers, who were stunned, barely able to articulate their condolences and offers of help, he sounded giddily elated,” Earl Spencer wrote about King Charles in Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, per the excerpt published in the Daily Mail.
“Sounded like a lottery winner”
Spencer recalled thinking the now-King “sounded like a lottery winner” when he heard the devastating news. Diana’s younger brother also claimed that Charles told him he had broken the heartbreaking news to his sons, Prince William and Harry, who were just 15 and 12 when they lost their mother.
According to Earl, Charles said he told William and Harry “first thing in the morning in their bedrooms at Balmoral.”
“It all sounded strangely matter-of-fact, given the enormity of the disaster,” Spencer wrote. “Looking back now, I suspect the prince’s first reaction must have been to think more of how this event might free him to marry the woman he loved, rather than appreciating the loss of one he did not,” Spencer continues in the excerpt published by the Daily Mail.
Diana’s brother added. “It can be hard to feel too much sympathy for an ex-spouse, or those who care for them profoundly, after bitter divorce.”
In another extract, Spencer claimed that in the days following Diana’s death, the then-Prince Charles told him: “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”
Buckingham Palace responds
Buckingham Palace rarely responds to claims made. However, this time, they did.
In a statement released Wednesday, the palace wrote, “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss.”
