15-year-old Daria Serkov was killed after she was struck by a truck while riding a Citi Bike in Manhattan, New York. Now, her grieving family is asking for privacy as they mourn the devastating loss of their beloved daughter. They are also remembering Daria as a loving, energetic girl who brought joy to everyone around her.
Daria Serkov was out with a 13-year-old friend when the tragedy occurred. The two girls were riding a rental bike called a “Citi Bike” on 14th Street on the Lower East Side when they were hit by a truck.
Daria died at the scene. The 13-year-old girl survived the accident but was taken to hospital with injuries.
The family’s plea following Daria’s death
Now Daria’s family has chosen to speak out about the difficult time following her death. In a statement, the family writes that they are experiencing “unimaginable” grief and they ask to be left alone so they can process the loss together.
The family also shares that Daria, whom they lovingly called Dasha, was full of love, joy, and energy. They described her as someone who cared deeply about others.
“Our beloved Daria, our Dasha, was full of love, joy, and energy,” the family writes in a post on the fundraising site GoFundMe, according to New York Post.
“She cared deeply for others and brought warmth to the lives of those around her. Her generous spirit and loving heart made her deeply cherished. We will carry her light, her compassion, and the love she gave us in our hearts always.”
At the same time, they share that Daria’s name was made public before the family themselves were ready. They state that journalists subsequently called relatives at all hours, both day and night. The family reportedly had to hire security in order to get the privacy they need.
“Our family is living through an unimaginable loss,” the statement reads. “We ask for privacy and space to grieve together, to honor Dasha’s life, and to begin processing a sorrow that words cannot express.”
Raising money for the family
Despite the difficult situation, the family also wants to thank everyone who has shown their support. They extend a special thank you to those who attended the memorial on Saturday evening and to all who have continued to keep Daria in their thoughts.
A fundraiser for the family has also been launched online. By Monday afternoon, it had raised more than $111,000.
