Kathy Griffin slams Shane Gillis over controversial ‘SNL’ monologue with brutal remark about his looks

Shane Gillis’ appearance on Saturday Night Live on Saturday, where he jokes about women and their gym clothes, sparked a huge backlash. Now, actress Kathy Griffin slams the comedian, and she’s not holding back.

65-year-old Kathy Griffin has broken her silence about Shane Gillis following his controversial appearance on Saturday Night Live. It sparked huge backlash after he made jokes about women and their gym clothes.

The controversy occurred during Gillis’ opening monologue on Saturday Night Live on October 10.

The comedian took aim at women who wear short shorts to the gym, saying they “dress like whores.” He also joked about the bright colors and tight fit of some workout clothes, as well as the difficulty men supposedly face when trying not to look.

“I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now,” Gillis said. “Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe it,” he continued, describing women’s colored, tight-fitting workout shorts as “artificial bait.”

He added, “And don’t look, you’re not allowed to look.”

The monologue has sparked a huge backlash, and several comedians and celebrities have spoken out against Gillis. For example, actor Dan Levy, best known for Schitt’s Creek.

In an Instagram post, Levy wrote, “Women wearing short shorts to the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists. There’s a difference there.”

This isn’t the first time Shane Gillis has become the center of controversy. In 2019, he was fired from Saturday Night Live just days after being announced as a cast member after clips of him on a podcast using homophobic and racist slurs resurfaced.

Now, another celebrity has decided to criticize Gillis, and it’s not anyone. Comedian Kathy Griffin called the SNL cast member a “hack” in an interview with Page Six, criticizing what she sees as a growing trend of male comedians making outdated jokes about women.

Also, she made it clear that she believes he has the right to say what he wants, even if she strongly disagrees with him.

“I think as a comic I’m always going to fight for the First Amendment and his right to say it and yet I don’t have to like it,” Griffin told Page Six. “So, I defend his right to say it, and I also defend everyone else’s right to think less of him.”

“They all look like they can’t get laid”

Kathy Griffin went on to criticize comedians who have found success through social media and podcasts, mentioning Joe Rogan as one example of the influence behind some of these performers.

“There are a lot of hacks who are doing very well, and they come from TikTok or the podcast world. He’s not the only guy to break out from Joe Rogan’s influence,” she continued.

“There are so many; they all look alike to me. They all look like they can’t get laid; they all sound alike to me; they all tell the same jokes…and they tell these jokes about women that are from like 100 years ago, like women should be in the kitchen and shut up and all this other stuff.” Kathy Griffin added in her Page Six interview.

While Griffin defended Shane Gillis’ right to make his own jokes, she also made it clear that she believes the audience have every right to criticize them, too.
