Donald Trump has had a thing for renaming things lately. Now, he’s done it again. In a furious rant on social media, the president has urged New Mexico to swap “Mexico” for “America.” But according to Trump, the reason has nothing to do with the name itself; instead, it has another “boost” reason.
While many Americans are worried about expensive gas and groceries, President Donald Trump has continued to “rage a war” on several names in and outside the U.S.
The 80-year-old has already renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America” for federal use and the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” something that has been both praised and questioned.
But it appears that Trump isn’t done yet. On Truth Social, the president went on a rant about the state of New Mexico, urging them to swap out Mexico for “America.” The president claimed it would boost both home values and state pride.
“New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” Trump wrote.
“The name would add great value and prestige to the State! Home Values and Incomes would rise, and you would be even prouder while saluting our beautiful American Flag! Maybe even the Crooked Elections that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!”
While he offered no evidence to support his election allegations, he remains convinced the rebranding would increase property values and incomes.
Donald Trump demands New Mexico be rebranded ‘New America’
This is not the first time Donald has urged the state to rename themselves. Last month, he shared a map showing a crossed-out “Mexico” on the map, replacing it with “America.” The White House official X account also shared it.
Moreover, during the RNC Midterm Convention in early September, Trump said that renaming it “New America” had strong support.
“You have a neighboring state, New Mexico. We think it should be called New America,” Trump said, per Fox. “I’ll tell you, the people love the idea.”
He added, “I don’t know about the radical left. I’m sure it doesn’t like it, but the people love it.”
One who isn’t a big fan of the idea is New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat. Shortly after Trump’s latest rant, she posted to her X account, asking, “What policy failure is Trump trying to distract Americans from this time?”

“Let me repeat: New Mexico was New Mexico long before the United States existed and we’ll be New Mexico forevermore. And while we’re talking about our great state, Americans should also know we’ve been busy delivering universal, no cost child care,” Lujan wrote.

“We’re also the only state that fully replaced health care subsidies that were gutted by Trump and congressional Republicans. Independent experts say our elections are among the most secure in the nation. It’s just that Trump can’t seem to accept that voters are rewarding Democrats for policies that make life easier for working families,” she added, ending the post with exclaiming, “¡Viva Nuevo Mexico!”
Donald Trump might want to change the name, but it would take a lot for it to happen.
Why? Well, New Mexico’s name is written into Article I of its constitution, which states, “The name of this state is New Mexico.”
