Dementia expert points out one key detail people missed in Donald Trump’s viral Oval Office clip

A tense exchange between Donald Trump and a White House reporter on Tuesday has gone viral, with some social media users questioning the president’s mental fitness.

On Tuesday, October 20, President Donald Trump clashed with Andrew Feinberg, The Independent’s White House correspondent, during a press gaggle in the Oval Office.

Feinberg was asking about the administration’s new anti-fraud push, including a plan to give whistleblowers 1 percent of any fraudulent funds they uncover. Trump and Vice President JD Vance both answered, with Trump then asking the reporter who he was.

When Feinberg tried to ask a follow-up, believing the president had pointed at him, things escalated. Trump told him he didn’t know who he was but that he had better be careful.

“Wait, wait, wait, wait. Quiet, quiet!” Trump snapped at him according to The Independent and going on: “What’s wrong with you? Are you a sick person? I actually think there’s something wrong with you.” Clips of the exchange spread fast online, racking up millions of views.

The reporter was pulled from Trump’s next trip

Vance then shared a clip of the exchange on X and called Feinberg an “imbecile.” Feinberg fired back, telling the vice president that if he was going to insult him, he should at least tag his account.

On Wednesday, Feinberg said he had been removed as the print pool reporter for Trump’s Thursday trip to Iowa. The White House Correspondents’ Association condemned the decision. Its president, Jacqui Heinrich, called it “retaliation.”

A White House spokesperson pushed back on this claim, saying no journalist has a constitutional right to access the Oval Office, Air Force One or other private spaces.

Viewers point to the president’s age

While Trump has a long and well documented history of attacking journalists, many people felt his anger in this clip stood out.

Some suggested the outburst could be a sign of cognitive decline, with some speculating about dementia. At 80, Trump is the oldest person ever sworn in as president. Questions about his health have grown in recent months, after reports of apparent daytime drowsiness, bruising on his hands and swollen ankles.

“I have looked after people with Dementia for around 8 years of my life. When I tell you that the way this man said ‘quiet’ paired with the facial expression has made me realise he’s got dementia,” one commentator wrote on X, with another adding: “He is exhibiting Lewy Body Dementia symptoms. His demeanor changes at the drop of a hat.”

CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner said in May that the president appeared to suffer from severe daytime sleepiness.

Public opinion is split. In an April YouGov poll, 48 percent of respondents said they believed Trump had experienced some degree of cognitive decline.

How the White House has responded

The White House keeps firmly rejecting any and all suggestions that Trump is unwell. Spokesman Davis Ingle has called him the sharpest and most energetic president in American history. He also accused medical professionals who speculate about Trump’s health of breaking their oath.

According to the White House, the bruising on Trump’s hands comes from frequent handshakes, and the ankle swelling is caused by chronic venous insufficiency. Trump himself said after a physical in May that everything had checked out perfectly.

He also had plenty of supporters online, with some telling Feinberg he should have been thrown out of the Oval Office.
