Donald Trump has responded after Republicans were projected to lose the House in the midterm elections. His post on Truth Social has quickly spread online.
Donald Trump has broken his silence after Republicans were projected to lose control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections. In a post on Truth Social, the president made it clear he did not see the result as a verdict on him.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote. “Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
It was the sign-off that got people talking online, with many users sharing the post and poking fun at its formal tone.
A very different tone before the vote
The tone of Trump’s message post-election was quite different from the one prior to it. On the eve of the vote, he appeared on Hannity and urged Republican voters to treat the midterms as a vote on him.
“I’m just asking everybody to pretend that I’m on the ballot,” he said. “And in a way, I am.”
“Well he said vote as if he was on the ballot so I did… now we get to work!!!” one commenter wrote on Facebook, with another adding: “This goes to show you that Democrats and the real Republicans and the independent can still see eye to eye.”
According to VT, he held 28 rallies across the country in October, posted 44 Truth Social endorsements of Republican candidates in just 13 minutes, and held six telephone rallies in a single night. He told supporters that a big turnout would mean a landslide win.
This isn’t the first time Trump has pointed out that his name wasn’t on the ballot after a disappointing result. After the Republicans lost the House in the 2018 midterms, he made a similar remark. After Democrats won key races in the 2025 off-year elections, he shared a post citing pollsters who said “TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT” was one of the reasons for the losses.
What the result would mean
Democrats were projected to win the House on election night, according to Decision Desk HQ. If that holds, Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become Speaker in January, the first Black American in the role.
Controlling the House would let Democrats launch investigations into Trump’s administration and have more say over the federal budget.
Exit polls put Trump’s approval rating at 38%. Nearly half of voters said they saw the election as a rebuke of the president.
The result also ends one of Trump’s campaign promises. Three weeks before the vote, he said every adult American would get $5,000 if Republicans kept both chambers of Congress. He did not mention it in his post.
