Johnny Depp may not be done playing Captain Jack Sparrow after all. Despite previously insisting that nothing could persuade him to return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the actor has now revealed what it would take to get him back on board.
Speculation about another appearance has continued for years as the future of the franchise remains uncertain, with a proposed Margot Robbie-led project falling through and reboot plans making little progress since the last installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales, premiered in 2017.
Depp previously made his feelings about returning quite clear, saying that not even “$300 million and a million alpacas” would convince him.
However, his latest comments suggest there may still be a possibility.
While promoting his upcoming film Ebenezer, Depp was asked whether he would consider playing the iconic pirate again.
“If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the Pirates franchise, the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note,” Depp said, according to LADbible.

He also made it clear that producer Jerry Bruckheimer would play an important role in any potential return.
“I will go to work with Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn’t matter, if it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last year, the producer revealed that he had spoken with Depp. According to Bruckheimer, Depp could be open to returning, provided he approves of the material.
He also suggested the next movie would most likely be a reboot, although he hoped there would still be room for Captain Jack Sparrow.
At the time, Bruckheimer said the script was still being developed, explaining that they “haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close”.
More recently, he gave Deadline another update on the discussions.
“We’re talking to Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay and hopefully we can get this done.”
He made it clear that he would like to see the actor return.
“It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it.
“I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page; that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.”
For now, Depp has not confirmed a return, and the franchise’s future remains uncertain, and fans may not have seen the last of Captain Jack Sparrow just yet.
