Florida has been hit with a second plane crash. Just days after the fatal Learjet 60 private jet crashed in Palm Beach, killing nine, on Wednesday, authorities in Smyrna Beach shared news that another small plane carrying one person went down. Now, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has shared an update
Florida has not yet recovered from the horrifying Learjet 60 plane crash before a second accident has occurred. A small plane has crashed in Florida, leaving its pilot seriously injured.
The aircraft went down near Turnbull Bay Road in New Smyrna Beach on Wednesday afternoon, November 4, prompting a major emergency response.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the crash was reported at around 2:23 p.m. near the 3000 block of Turnbull Bay Road. When first responders arrived, they found the wreckage of a single-engine aircraft in a wooded area.
“The exact location was not immediately known, and units on the ground searched the area with no success until Air One responded and spotted the crash site from overhead,” the Volusia Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook statement.
Emergency crews worked to free the pilot, who was the only person aboard the aircraft, according to authorities. Firefighters extricated the injured pilot from the wreckage and provided medical assistance at the scene.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office then used its Air One helicopter to transport the pilot to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Second plane crashes in Florida days after deadly Learjet accident
The pilot was reportedly taken to Halifax Health after being declared a trauma alert. Several emergency agencies responded, including New Smyrna Beach police and firefighters, Volusia County EMS, Volusia County Fire Rescue, and Port Orange police.
Photographs released by the New Smyrna Beach Police Department showed emergency crews gathered around the badly damaged aircraft in the wooded area. Officials have not released further details about the pilot’s condition, but the Volusia Sheriff’s Office stated he would be treated for “serious injuries.”
The plane crash occurred just days after the deadly Learjet plane crash in Palm Beach, where nine people lost their lives. On Tuesday, authorities shared an update on where they are at in the investigation.
NTSB Member Tom Chapman said at a briefing that investigators had found three of the jet’s left elevators about 1.3 and 3.8 miles from the crash site. It’s still not determined what caused the crash.
We send our thoughts and prayers to the pilot of the small plane that crashed in Florida and hope they make a full recovery.
