Doctors warn parents to expect more cases of strange coronavirus syndrome in kids

Doctors are warning parents to expect to see more cases of a strange condition that seems to be afflicting children who have suffered from COVID-19.

As per CNN, the condition is known as pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome, and appears to be a post-viral syndrome.

Dr. Jeffrey Burns, critical care specialist at Boston Children’s Hospital, has been coordinating a global group of doctors in comparing notes on the condition, with investigations now being undertaken on at least 150 children, mostly based in New York.

Speaking to CNN, Dr. Burns explained: “This multisystem inflammatory syndrome is not directly caused by the virus. The leading hypothesis is that it is due to the immune response of the patient.”

Reports say symptoms of the condition include a persistent fever, inflammation and poor organ function. Children may also suffer from symptoms associated with blood vessel inflammation, such as red eyes, a bright red tongue and cracked lips.

It should be said that not all the children who have tested positive for multisystem inflammatory syndrome have also tested positive for coronavirus. However, research undertaken thus far shows that there is a link.

“There seems to be delayed responses to Covid infections in these kids,” said Dr. Moshe Arditi, a paediatric infectious diseases expert at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles.

Dr. Burns, meanwhile, has stated his belief that more cases will be in evidence as coronavirus continues its spread.

“We can expect that each of the epicenters will see clusters of these emerging roughly four to six weeks later,” Burns said to CNN.

“It makes sense that it emerged in New York first because New York had the largest and most severe outbreak (of Covid-19), followed by New Jersey and, unfortunately, Boston.”

While a few children have died from the syndrome, Burns sad that the majority are now seriously affected.

“We do have proven treatments that we can use and are using,” he said.

I don’t know about you, but this is worrying to me! The last thing we need right now, on top of everything else, is a condition that further threatens our children!
