By now we all know that if someone becomes ill with COVID-19, they must isolate themselves so as to not infect other members of their family.
But what about children or people who can’t take care of themselves?
Jacob and Leah Simmons knew the risks, yet they willingly and lovingly opened their home to a 3-month-old baby who had tested positive for COVID-19.
“They said he was from quite a ways away. He was tiny and, for the most part, no one else would take him so we immediately said yes,” Leah said.
Jacob and Leah, who have a 2-year-old daughter, had previously cared for a foster child and were anxiously awaiting another call when they received one in July.
A 3-month-old boy was in need of a home, and he had COVID-19.
The couple quickly needed to prepare their home in Terrell, Texas and their daughter.
“I took a step back and I had like 15 minutes of heart palpitations,” Leah said.
They decided Jacob would care for the baby, who they named “Little Man.” So he stayed upstairs while Leah stayed downstairs with their daughter.
For two weeks, the Simmons were extremely careful. They wore masks all the time, constantly washed their hands, and paid close attention to Little Man’s symptoms.
Any time Jacob went downstairs he made sure to change his clothes and shower.
“It was a lot of fun getting to hold him,” he said. “I’m not so much of a worrier. I just kind of did it.”
Thankfully, no one in their family got COVID-19.
Little Man has since recovered for the virus, but the Simmons are still carefully monitoring him to see if he still has any symptoms.
“We were OK with us getting COVID more so than him not being loved,” Jacob said. “If it comes down to that, we’ll take him every time.”
What an incredible family. To take such a risk in order to give a little baby a loving home, wow.
