Heroic crossing guard risks her life to save student from speeding car

A Maryland crossing guard is being credited with saving the life of a student after a car sped through a crosswalk.

Corporal Annette Goodyear with the North East Police Department, pushed the middle school student out of the way just as she was struck by the speeding car.

“It was strange. As I’m lying there I’m thinking to myself this actually did happen. I didn’t even know what to think about at that point,” Goodyear told local news.

“It didn’t seem real as it was happening.”

Some may find the video disturbing.

The incident, which occurred Friday, was captured on camera. Goodyear, who has been a crossing guard for 14 years, raised her hand indicating to oncoming traffic that a student was crossing the street.

Despite her raised hand and bright orange jacket, the driver of a black car appeared to pay no attention and sped through the crosswalk.

Luckily, Goodyear reacted with cat-like reflexes and pushed the student out of harm’s way in the nick of time.

Unfortunately, Goodyear was clipped by the vehicle and tossed to the ground.

Goodyear said her first priority was making sure the student was safe.

“For me, I’m a parent as well, and it’s like I just want to make sure all these children are safe, and it didn’t matter if I was struck or not.”

She was transported to a hospital where she was later released. She returned to the school to check up on the student, but learned she had returned home to be with her family.

“She came down the stairs saw me standing there and as she was walking toward the door she was getting teary-eyed, and you could see it and when she got teary-eyed, then her dad started getting teary-eyed, and we all started at that point,” Goodyear said. “I was just so thankful she was standing there and that she was ok.”

County Executive Danielle Hornberger called Goodyear’s willingness to sacrifice her life an “amazing act of heroism.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the driver of the vehicle received four citations.

Wow, this crossing guard deserves a lot of praise for risking her life to save a child.
