Two Brothers Free An Eagle From A Trap. Now Their Spectacular Selfie Is Spreading Around The World.

It’s not every day you get the chance to take a selfie with a bald eagle, but once you do, you can count on one thing: that photo will spread like wildfire. Especially when you also saved its life. Two Canadian brothers, Michael and Neil Fletcher, were out hunting in Windy Lake, Ontario, when they encountered the mighty bird stuck in a trap. When they freed the eagle, they took a picture with their new friend. Great work, guys!

Brothers Michael and Neil Fletcher were out hunting at the end of November when they discovered that a bald eagle with his foot stuck in a trap.

They gently approached the bird to save it, casting a sweater over its head to calm it down.

“At first the eagle seemed a bit nervous (…). As soon as he realized we were trying to help he kind of calmed down a little bit. His head would kind of move back and forth to look at us, but that was the most he’d do,” Neil told CBC News.

The brothers struggled with the trap, but in the end they managed to dislodge the eagle.

“It was relieving to see that it was still alive,” Neil said. “I knew we had to do something right away.”

When the royal bird was free, Neil suggested that they take a selfie with it. They then posted the shot on Facebook and the picture just took off.

They then released the bird out into freedom again, as you can see in the video below. Beautiful!

Ornithologist Chris Blomme told CBC News that it required great courage to liberate such a large creature.

“I think it’s really great the Michael and Neil took the gumption to actually try and deal with the bird, because it’s quite a large, predatory bird with sharp claws and a sharp beak,” he said.

“Most people might be a bit hesitant to approach them. However, covering them up over the head is a good way to blind the bird so you can approach it.”
