Jenna Bush Hager is calling her husband a “hero”, and with good reason.
She recently revealed that he saved a woman who was choking in a restaurant by immediately jumping into action.
Hager explained that the incident occurred this past Wednesday night. The couple was out to dinner with her husband Henry’s mother.
“We sit down, we’re having a lovely little conversation,” Jenna told co-host Hoda Kotb on Thursday on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna.
Painting the scene, Jenna explained that her back was to most of the restaurant, while Henry was facing the other diners. The three were having a quiet dinner until the event started.
“All of a sudden, he says, ‘That woman is choking!’” Jenna said. “He gets up, he runs over, and he gives a woman the Heimlich maneuver for, it felt like it was 10 minutes.”
Hager explained that other patrons and employees went to the woman as well in an attempt to help her husband save her.
“He continued, and other men were helping him, and I could tell he thought it wasn’t working, and he was saying, ‘Guys, keep going, keep going, keep going!’” Jenna said. “And she survived. 911 arrived.”
On the show, Hoda was impressed by how quickly Henry had sprung into action. Jenna explained that her husband had received training for moments like this in his Eagle Scout days, years ago, and that training clearly kicked in.
“People were saying to him, like, ‘Are you a doctor?’And he was like, ‘No, I was an Eagle Scout,’” she recalled with a laugh.
Jenna further went on to explain that her father, former president George W. Bush, had actually been in a similar situation back in the 1970’s as well!
While giving a speech at an event, Bush noticed a woman in the crowd choking and immediately jumped down to help her.
“He jumped off the podium, because he’s the only one who had the view of her, and did the Heimlich and saved her life,” Jenna said.
Amazed by the bravery of both men, Hoda commended them to Jenna.
“The fact that both of the men in your life, the most important men in your life, get up, go over, and do the thing — that’s everything,” she said.
“I texted [Henry] this morning, and I was like, ‘You are my hero,’” Jenna replied emotionally. “He is. What a good guy. He’s not just going to sit back and watch something bad happen. He’s going to help.”
Jenna and Henry’s 2008 marriage has led to a happy life and three beautiful children: Mila, 9, Poppy, 7, and Hal, 3.
Jenna has previously discussed her love for Henry on TODAY in 2020, sharing that he has always made her feel secure and comfortable being herself.
“I do think one of the reasons why I knew really soon Henry was the one is I was completely myself and he loved it,” she said.
Clearly, Henry is a hero in more than one way! Let us know what you think about his amazing feat of heroism in the comments.
