More than 25 years after the release of Titanic, Kate Winslet is sharing a secret about the infamous door scene.
While promoting her latest film, Lee, Winslet was asked about the final moments of the film where the audience witnesses Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Jack Dawson, and Winslet’s character, Rose DeWitt Bukater, struggle to survive in the freezing Atlantic Ocean.
“Well that was quite an awkward tank,” she began. “To burst the bubble, it was waist height at that time … Leo I’m afraid to say was kneeling down. I shouldn’t be saying anyways, Jimmy Cameron’s gonna be ringing me,” the actress joked, referring to Titanic director, James Cameron.
She also admitted that not only was it not very deep, but it wasn’t very wide either.
“I was regularly like, ‘Can I just go for a pee?’” she continued. “Then I get up, get off the door, walk to the edge of the tank, sort of 20 feet away and I literally have to fling my leg over and climb up and come and get back on the door again. It’s terrible.”
Despite its size, Winslet said it was “amazing” since it was an infinity tank which meant you could hear water constantly rushing over the side.
She added that due to the sound of the water, during “the last 22 minutes” of the film, everyone was “entirely looped” in.
For nearly three decades, fans of the iconic film have debated whether Jack and Rose could have fit on the floating piece of wood.
In 2012, Mythbusters tested the theory that both Jack and Rose would have fit on the door. In the end while they did find it plausible, Cameron explained it was necessary that Jack died.
“Maybe we screwed up and the board should have been a tiny bit smaller,” he said. “But the dude’s going down.”
Ten years later, Winslet also tried to settle the debate, adding, “He could have fit on that door, but it would not have stayed afloat. It wouldn’t.”
