Meghan Markle didn’t know much about the royal family when growing up in the US. However, once she and Prince Harry got married, her view shifted into something of a nightmare.
Not only did Meghan claim that she didn’t get any help from Buckingham Palace regarding her mental health problems.
Now, a royal author claims that a senior royal aides actually told the Duchess of Sussex that she’d never be ”in first division’ as her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s time together has been full of love. The two have had one baby boy, Archie, and this summer, they are expecting their second child.
Meghan’s first meeting
But at the same time as the two lovebirds have taken the world by storm, becoming somewhat of royal favorites among the public, it has also been hectic.
They left the royal family and claimed many serious things against the royal family in the Oprah interview, however the Queen and several other family members denies it. But in the aftermath, many royal experts and sources have stepped forward, telling a whole different tale.
Speaking with Oprah Winfrey in their primetime interview, Harry said that his family liked Meghan from the very start. It seamed like everything was going “according to plan” .
“You know, my father, my brother, Kate and all the rest of the family, they were really welcoming,” he said.
On May 19, 2018, Meghan Markle and Harry tied the knot at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. However, due to a very complex relationship, her father wasn’t present.
“We are absolutely thrilled”
People from all over the world eagerly watched the wedding, and the entire Royal Family was of course in attendance. However, Meghan’s sister-in-law Kate Middleton didn’t have a specific role during the wedding, since she just had given birth to her and William’s third child, Louis.
For the royal family, the news that Harry and Meghan were getting married was fantastic.
“William and I are absolutely thrilled,” Kate Middleton told the Associated Press when Harry and Meghan first announced the wedding plans. “It’s such exciting news. It’s a really happy time for any couple, and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this happy moment.”
But the relationship between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle looks like to be a very important piece into why things have been kind of bad. Even though it started off great.
On Christmas Day in 2017 – about half a year before the wedding – Kate and Meghan were photographed together for the first time. A couple of months later, they came together for their first joint royal engagement.
Together with their respective husbands, they spoke about the Royal Foundation, but it was Kate and Meghan who stole the spotlight.
Relationship with Kate
“We have different opinions, and they work really well together,” Prince Harry said during the event. “Working as family does have its challenges, of course, it does.”
“Togetherness at its finest,” Meghan Markle added.
Up until this point, Meghan and Kate had only been seen in public together with their husbands. However, during the legendary Wimbledon tennis tournament, they were seen watching the women’s final together without Harry and William there.
Kate and Meghan were smiling and laughing – and it seemed as though they had a wonderful relationship.
Speaking to Hello! in 2019, author Carolyn Durand said that they were very close around the time Meghan and Prince Harry’s son Archie was born.
“Kate was a great source of support to Meghan in the days leading up to Archie’s birth and, despite reports of a rift, they are family and have a really lovely friendship,” Durand said.
“Their relationship has constantly evolved over time and they have become closer since Meghan’s wedding.”
Despite the shocking allegations of racism, Meghan spoke openly about many other things, too.
Spoke out about mental health
One subject to float to the forefront was her relationship with Kate Middleton, with whom she’s been rumored to have something of a feud with.
Further, Markle also talked a lot about the worsening of her own mental health.
In fact, Meghan admitted to Oprah that one of the main reasons for her doing the interview was to speak out on her mental health issues in order to try and help others.
“I share this because there’s so many people who are afraid to voice that they need help,” Meghan Markle said. “And I know personally how hard it is to—not just hard it is but when your voice is silenced, to be told no. This was emails, begging for help, saying very specifically I am concerned for my mental welfare. Nothing was ever done. So we had to find a solution.”
Meghan didn’t know much about the British Royal family when she grew up. Therefore, it was easy for her to have an image of them as something “far from reality”.
Subjected to horrible treatment
However, when she joined the family while dating Prince Harry, she quickly became accustomed to the truth. According to her, she was not only subjected to horrific treatment from the British tabloid press, but also from members of her new Royal Family.
Markle described a breaking point where she didn’t see a solution to the problem.
“I would sit up at night, and I was just like, ‘I don’t understand how all of this is being churned out’,” she told Oprah Winfrey.
“And again I wasn’t seeing it, but it’s almost worse when you feel it through the expression of my mom or my friends or them calling me crying like, ‘Meg, they’re not protecting you.’ And I realized it was all happening just because I was breathing.”
For years, speculation had been abound concerning about how Buckingham Palace itself might have played a role in actually helping the British tabloid press smear both Harry and Meghan. Speaking to Oprah, Meghan revealed she believes this to be true.
“I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there was an active role that the Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us,” Meghan Markle said.
“Total shock”
“And if that comes with risk of losing things, I mean, I’ve—there’s a lot that’s been lost already.”
There can be no doubting that the Oprah interview sent the British Royal Family into shock. Harry’s brother and sister-in-law, Prince William and Kate Middleton, were said to have taken it particularly hard.
A US Weekly source said that the couple were in “total shock after hearing what Meghan and Harry said”. Another source said that Kate would “never forgive Meghan for throwing shade at her.”
“The interview was the final nail, it’s over. Meghan burned all of her bridges and Kate has no interest in speaking to her,” the source told US Weekly.
Even though Kate and Meghan was said to have had a good relationship at first, this didn’t make it any better. But was it them who started all this, or was it someone else that pretty much built a wall between the two?
Well according to Tom Quinn, a royal author, Meghan Markle was told that she’d never be ”in first division’ by a senior royal aides, he claims.
‘Will never be in same division’
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal feud has been going on for a while. And his relationship to his brother following the interview with Oprah Winfrey, after which Queen Elizabeth issued a statement, responding to the claims made.
“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the Queen said.
“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
William also responded, telling Sky, “we’re very much not a racist family.”
Following the royal marriage between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, the couple got their own private residence.
Meghan Markle – living situation
They lived at Kensington Palace for a short while, however that residence was actually Kate and Prince William’s home.
“It’s in the grounds of Kensington Palace, and it’s quite small, Quinn said according to the Express. “It’s tiny compared to the enormous double apartment that Kate and William have.
Instead, Harry and Meghan moved into Nottingham Cottage, not far from Kate and William. But it was at this point their relationship also worsened for several reasons, according to royal author Tom Quinn.
Meghan had a hard time to reconcile that Kensington Palace was reserved for Kate and William. And at the same time, a royal senior aides told her that she’d never be ”in first division’.
“It was being pointed out to them in no uncertain terms that they weren’t in the first division, because that place is held by William and Kate. Inevitably that led to friction,” Quinn claims.
“In Meghan’s world, if you’re determined enough, you can get to the top. But Meghan can’t, she can’t get to the top whatever she does.”
Bought new California home
After a short stint, Meghan and Harry moved into Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.
Since leaving the royal family, Meghan and Harry have lived in both Canada and in the US. They have rented several houses, however, now they have settled in Montecito, just outside Santa Barbara, California.
The area is an escape for many Hollywood stars tired of the hectic lifestyle in Los Angeles. Meghan and Harry bought their $14 million dollar house last year, and neighbors include Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ellen DeGeneres.
However, it has been quite hectic for Meghan and Harry. Hello Magazine reports that the couple had police called to US home 9 times in as many months. The latest one happened on February 16, and was listed as an “alarm activation”.
