Michael Mann confirms ‘Heat 2,’ prequel to his classic bank robbery thriller, will be his next film

Michael Mann’s Heat is one of the best movies ever. It gave us the long-awaited match up of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, with the two legends playing on opposite sides of the law in a thrilling crime epic.

It also gave us this truly iconic line delivery:

If you’ve watched Heat dozens of times on Netflix and always dreamed about getting even more sweet bank robbery action, get ready, because Heat 2 is coming.

Director Michael Mann recently announced that he’s planning to make a follow-up to his 1995 classic as his next film.

“Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari,” the 80-year-old director told Deadline Hollywood. “It did very well. I plan to shoot that next.”

Heat 2, released as a novel in August 2022, serves as both a prequel and sequel to the original film, focusing on younger versions of the characters played by Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer and Al Pacino, years before the fateful LA bank robbery depicted in Heat.

It’s not clear who from the original cast will be returning, as many of the main characters are dead by the end of the film. But Adam Driver is said to be in talks to play a younger version of Neil McCauley, the Robert De Niro character.

Driver recently collaborated with Mann on his new film Ferrari. While Mann didn’t confirm that they were re-teaming for Heat 2, he did say they worked well together.

“Adam and I got along like a house on fire,” Mann said. “We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other and we had a great time working together artistically.”

We’re excited to see who will be cast in the new movie, although they have big shoes to fill. Not only is Heat packed with legendary stars, but also some of the greatest acting of all time:

It will be hard to top, but we’re still excited.
