Olena Zelenska is in the middle of a war. She and her husband, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stood firm when Russia invaded their country in 2022. But while Olena is the First Lady, and so committed to doing everything she can to help her fellow citizens during wartime, she is also a mother.
Besides promoting children’s education and fighting to return abducted Ukrainian children, she’s doing her utmost to offer her children normality. If you ask me, the Ukrainian First Lady is nothing less than a hero – and it’s time to praise her for the role model she is, both as an inspirational citizen and mother.
Olena Zelenska and Volodymyr Zelenskyy have been married for a long time. When the latter became president in 2019, the couple could never have imagined the horrific situation their country would be in just years later. After two months of hiding at the initial outbreak of the war, she returned to be at her husband’s side when it became clear that Russia’s invasion would be a drawn out affair.
While Olena has naturally prioritized keeping her children, Oleksandra and Kyrylo, safe, she and her husband have shown incredible resilience and dedication to their country. For the First Lady, disappearing entirely was never an option, and it quickly became evident that she would not be cowed by Putin and his Russian army.
Today, it’s safe to say she has become an incredible role model for women all over the world, showing immense strength and character in the process.
For one, Olena has set a shining example of how one can respond in times of crisis, for her children as well as the Ukrainian people. She has stayed composed and calm, and while the issue of the war is naturally a very complicated matter, the First Lady of Ukraine’s emotional strength when appearing in public is spell-binding.
Oleksandra and Kyrylo are lucky to have Olena as their mother, and not just because of how she has handled the last few years. It should not go unnoticed that the First Lady of Ukraine has always sought to put the children first, as she is dedicated to improving the educational system in Ukraine and helping the next generation thrive.

Keeping your feelings locked inside during wartime must be incredibly hard, and it’s hardly something people who haven’t been in the same situation can hope to fully fathom. But though her schedule has been packed, Olena Zelenska has also shown her soft side.
She continues to help families and children affected by the horrific war, while being a staunch advocate for humanitarian efforts and the stigma around mental health. In short, she leads by example, and it’s become clear over time that neither Olena or her husband are ready to back down in the face of monolithic adversity.
They deserve to live a life without war and conflict, and to see their children reach for the stars and follow their dreams. No matter what, it’s safe to say Olena can be immensely proud of herself. If I had a say in the matter, a more fitting title than ‘First Lady’ would be ‘Hero.’
