Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s final appearance as senior royals in the U.K. seems like a decade ago considering recent events.
But one award-winning photographer recently revealed how he got the stand-out image of the wonderful occasion capturing this royal couple at their best: so in love and so happy with such star quality.
The iconic image captures the celebrity couple as they walk under an umbrella, looking at each other with beaming smiles and the raindrops twinkling in the background.
Samir Hussein, who has been snapping the British royal family for over a decade, told Vogue how he captured such a beautiful moment.
“It was pouring down with rain, which can be very tricky when shooting flash photography,” he told Vogue in a statement.
“[It] also meant Harry and Meghan would be under an umbrella, which usually means it’s hard to get clean photos of the couple.”
‘I noticed a flash going off’
But little did he realize just how these seemingly tricky conditions would create such a magical moment.
“As they walked toward me, I noticed a flash going off from a camera in the crowd behind them,” Samir continued.
“I knew that if that light could be lined up to be right behind as they walked, then it could create a dramatic photo, acting like a backlight in a studio shot.
“I managed to maneuver myself to line up the flash behind them and then had to work quickly, with just a second or two to get the shot as they smiled wonderfully at each other.”
‘It’s one in a million’
He had no idea what he’d managed to capture until he found a dry space to download them onto his laptop.
“It’s a one in a million, when all the elements you could wish for as a photographer come together—perfect timing, great lighting, strong symbolism, and amazing subjects,” he says.
With the number of images we see taken on smart devices it’s good to be reminded what a real camera is capable of.
This stunning image will go down in history, not just for its beauty, but because of the significance of the time it was taken.
