Prince William's 11-word 'swipe' on Meghan Markle

Prince William and Meghan Markle have a rather up-and-down history. Before the former Suits star married Prince Harry, the future king wasn’t sure his brother had thought the whole thing through, even telling him to take his time to decide whether it suited him.

Once Meghan became a part of the Royal Family, she and William reportedly became fast friends. Sadly, the same could not be said for Meghan and Kate Middleton, which naturally affected William.

Then, when Meghan and Harry left the Royal Family, the former’s relationship with Prince William dissolved completely. However, even when the Sussexes were still working royals, it’s been said that perhaps not everything was as it seemed. One expert has even gone so far as to claim that William made quite the statement against Meghan — slamming her in a speech with 11 words.

About five years ago, royal fans worldwide joyfully followed the British Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth II was still alive, Harry and Meghan had married and welcomed their firstborn son, Prince Archie, while the future king and queen, Prince William and Kate Middleton, were becoming increasingly more popular by the day.

Sadly, today the general outlook isn’t half so positive for the Royal Family. It began with the Firm decreasing by two, as Harry and Meghan decided to leave. A year later, the Sussexes destroyed their relationship with the royals by speaking out against them, leveling several accusations at them when they did.

Some of the more serious allegations could well be accurate, but the monarchy refused to confirm or deny anything. In typically reserved fashion, the Royal Family have never made any statements about what Harry and Meghan said.

Naturally, the feud didn’t stop at Prince Harry and Prince William; the relationship between Meghan and the royals also went down the drain. Its downfall began before Harry and Meghan left the Royal Family, and greatly impacted the relationship between Meghan and William.

While the future king and Meghan, previously a big television star from the hit show Suits, enjoyed a good relationship at first. Yet even so, William wasn’t completely sure that his brother was thinking clearly.

Meghan Markle relationship with Prince William

Though William initially appeared to like Meghan, he was also concerned. Harry and Meghan’s relationship moved exceptionally quickly after a friend set them up on a blind date.

About a year before their wedding — and about a year after they began dating — William wanted to talk with his younger brother about Meghan. Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote in the book Finding Freedom, dubbed “Pro-Sussex,” that William was said to have told his brother, “Don’t feel you need to rush this,” and “Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.”

Scobie and Durand continued by saying that Harry was “pissed off” that William even asked him to take it slow, while the phrase “the girl” bothered him. Later, Scobie, who’s been closely connected to the Sussexes for years, said William “just wanted to make sure that Harry wasn’t blindsided by lust.”

William is also reported to have voiced concerns about how quickly his brother’s relationship developed, though this was done privately to his aides.

“William soon began to wonder about some of Meghan’s traits and motivations,” a source told the Daily Mail, as revealed by the Express. “He was worried that at times she seemed to be more concerned about her personal progression or profile over the wider goals and aims of the Royal Family.”

Prince William “desperately” wanted Meghan Markle to be happy

However, William decided to keep those feelings to himself. Why? Because he “desperately wanted her to be happy and appreciated the huge adjustment of entering the Royal Family,” according to the source.

Although there might have been friction behind the scenes before Harry married Meghan, it was nothing that members of the public had any knowledge of. But just months before the 2018 wedding at St George’s Chapel – when the Sussexes tied the knot – one royal expert now claims that William possibly took a dig at his soon-to-be sister-in-law in a speech.

Months prior to the wedding, Harry attended a royal event alongside his soon-to-be wife, brother, and Kate Middleton. The royal trio was there to launch the Royal Foundation Forum, which was also the first time Meghan Markle appeared at an event as a “working royal,” as per Cambridge Live.

The two couples took the stage with smiles on their faces. But according to Daily Mail’s royal editor Richard Eden, the smiles were a cover-up for what had happened backstage. Eden explained that there had been friction between Meghan and Kate before the event, which revealed a considerable difference in their personalities.

“We later learned from Prince Harry’s book Spare that there had been an awkward moment backstage when Meghan had asked to borrow Katherine’s lip gloss. He describes how Katherine was taken aback by this, but eventually found some and grimaced when Megan squeezed some out,” Eden said on the Royal Confidential Podcast.

He further explained how William appeared to take a swipe at Meghan during the speech, following the Duchess’s highlighting female empowerment with a “bold public endorsement” of the Me Too and Times Up campaigns.

“Honourable causes but a clear potential clash with politicians, which is the last thing the Royal Family wants,” Richard Eden continued. “You do wonder if a line in William’s speech, where he said, ‘The task for us would not be to reinvent the wheel,’ could have been aimed at his soon-to-be sister-in-law.”

Later in the event, one person asked the “Fab Four” if they had disagreements. Harry answered that there had been but that the disagreements were “healthy.”

William added: “We’ve got four different personalities and we’ve got the same passions to make a difference, but different opinions. I think those opinions work really really well. Working as a family does have its challenges and the fact that everyone is laughing shows they know exactly what it’s like. We’re stuck together for the rest of our lives.”

Prince William issued warning

Today, Harry and Meghan are thousands of miles from the Royal Family. However, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t still stars wherever they go. At the same time, the royals have struggled in recent months because of King Charles and Kate Middleton’s absences, not to mention Queen Camilla‘s recent health issues.

Royal historian and expert Tessa Dunlop has warned Prince William that the Sussexes could be a significant threat as a result. Just days ago, Charles attended the premiere of Gladiator 2 alone, which the royal expert said highlighted a significant change within the monarchy.

Speaking to the Mirror, Tessa Dunlop said: “He was up against Gladiatorial men but the King looked inescapably alone on the red carpet in Leicester Square last night. There was no retro glamor, no tinsel, no tiara. Even Camilla (still battling a nasty chest infection), was missing. To compensate, I longed for the King to wear an ermine gown, or pop a crown on his head. Instead, he dutifully made his way down the line of stellar names.”

Kate made a rare public appearance during the Remembrance Sunday event, her first major royal appearance since becoming cancer-free. Dunlop said it was a “painful reminder of what we are missing,” adding that two people—Prince Harry and Meghan Markle—could fill the glamor vacuum.

The royal expert described the Sussexes as “instinctively glamorous with bundles of razzmatazz,” warning William to “beware.”

Prince Harry to return to the UK without Meghan Markle

It’s not an outlandish assumption to suggest that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle won’t return to the royal fold anytime soon. Their relationship with the Royal Family is destroyed, and from what they have said, it’s impossible to imagine Prince William ever forgiving his brother for what he has done.

While Harry has been rumored to be open to returning to the UK — with claims that he has even looked at a ‘permanent home’ in his home country — Meghan appears less interested.

The estranged prince is currently in the middle of his court case against New Group Newspapers in London, which includes a legal battle against The Sun over allegations of unlawful information gathering. The trial is set to take place in January 2025, with Harry’s barrister saying that Harry “is one of two claimants whose claims are still live.”

Harry will attend the court case, but according to royal commentator Richard Fitzgerald, Meghan won’t. Her disinterest in returning to the UK — even to support her husband — is clear.

“I think that will be done separately, there are several reasons why Meghan will not come to the UK at the moment,” Fitzwilliams told GB News.

“It is perfectly obvious why, just look at the opinion polls,” he added. “Of course, there is a rift with the Royal Family, there is no reason for her to come.”

Still, Donald Trump’s threat of deporting Harry if it turns out he lied on his visa is still something the Sussexes seem to be thinking about. The couple have bought a new house in Portugal, which could be considered somewhat of a “backup plan” if Trump’s threats become reality. That said, Harry and Meghan are determined to stay in the US.

Speaking with the Express, several sources revealed that leaving is “not an option.” If they are dragged into a legal battle over it, the Sussexes are ready to fight.

“There are no plans [for the Sussexes] to move from the US,” a source claimed, while another added, “Harry and Meghan feel at home in California, and they won’t be leaving there without a fight.”

“Meghan is a US citizen, and Archie has just started a new school, so to leave the place they call home isn’t even an option,” a source told Express. “They have a very good legal team, and they have a lot of support behind them to ensure that they will be able to remain in the United States.”
