Rashida Jones pays sweetest tribute to dad Quincy Jones after music legend’s death at 91: “He was love”

The music world lost a true legend this week as Quincy Jones, the groundbreaking producer and composer, died at the age of 91.

Tributes have been pouring in from everywhere, in the music industry and beyond, but of course no one has taken the loss harder than Jones’ family. Jones was the father of 7 children, including famous actress Rashida Jones.

Recently, Rashida broke her silence and released a beautiful tribute to her late father.

Rashida Jones, 48, is an actress best known for playing Karen Filippelli on The Office and Ann Perkins on Parks and Recreation. She is the sixth-born child of Quincy Jones; her mother is The Mod Squad actress Peggy Lipton, Quincy’s third wife.

After Quincy Jones died on Sunday, Rashida opened up about her famous dad’s death. In a touching social media tribute, the actress remembered him as a hard-working musician and devoted, loving dad.

“My dad was nocturnal his whole adult life,” Rashida recalled. “He kept ‘jazz hours’ starting in high school and never looked back. When I was little, I would wake up in the middle of the night to search for him. Undoubtedly, he would be somewhere in the house, composing (old school, with a pen and sheet music). He would never send me back to bed. He would smile and bring me into his arms while he continued to work…there was no safer place in the world for me.”

“He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius,” she continued. “All accurate descriptions of my father but his music (and ALL of his work) was a channel for his love. He WAS love. He made everyone he ever met feel loved and seen. That’s his legacy.”

“I was fortunate enough to experience this love in close proximity. I’ll miss his hugs and kisses and unconditional devotion and advice. Daddy, it is an honor to be your daughter. Your love lives forever.” Rashida also included a photo of herself and her father when she was a baby.

As a music industry titan whose career spanned decades, it’s no surprise that there has been an outpouring of tributes for Quincy Jones, from everyone from Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder to Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama. But none can say as much about who he was as a person than this tribute from his daughter.

Quincy Jones was widely regarded as a music industry legend. His work includes the iconic Michael Jackson albums Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad, the chart-topping all-star charity single “We Are the World,” and the Oscar-nominated scores to In Cold Blood, The Wiz and The Color Purple. He received 28 Grammy Awards throughout his career.

Rashida Jones has honored her father’s legacy before, co-directing the Grammy-winning Netflix documentary Quincy. “We wanted to make the definitive movie about his life,” Rashida told Entertainment Weekly. “As much as my dad’s career has been followed and celebrated, nobody quite has the same relationship that I have been lucky enough to have with him.”
