Suzanne Somers’ husband reveals she was laid to rest wearing an unexpected pair of shoes

Suzanne Somers‘ husband, Alan Hamel, reveals his wife was laid to rest with an unusual pair of shoes.

Rather than be laid to rest with one of her many Manolo Blahniks, Hamel gave the Three’s Company star personalized Timberlands.

“Suzanne never really had boots designed for hiking on the rocks, so I ordered the Timberland boots,” the 87-year-old told People. “[I] made my gift personal by drawing on them in a few words that represented our life to some degree and made them very personal to Suzanne.”

Hamel explained if his late wife had worn Manolo Blahniks for her “final trip,” it would “have been predictable but not very personal.”

The Canadian television host chose Timberlands for Somers because while she was known for wearing Manolo Blahniks, the boots meant something more to the couple.

“Every time she put on the Timberlands, she said, ‘I am wearing you, and my boots will keep me safe.’”

For over 50 years, the couple’s morning routine “always included hiking to the top of one of the mountains, where there was a creek and a large flat rock in the middle of the creek.”

By the time Hamel and Somers reached the top of one of the mountains near their home, it would be time for lunch.

“We would have our lunch on the rock and then take a one-hour nap on the rock and then hike back down and go to work.”

Somers died October 15, one day before her 77th birthday.

The timing of her death made for an unusual mourning period. Family members had already begun gathering to celebrate her birthday, while others were set to arrive the following day.

“We actually toasted last night,” Hamel said. “We had, I think, 12 of us here, and all toasted Suzanne. I’m positive we’ll do something today. I don’t know what it will be, but it will involve a lot of cake, because Suzanne was crazy for cake.”

A beautiful way to pay tribute to a special shared moment between husband and wife.
