Renowned British keyboardist, pianist, and vocalist John Gosling, recognized for his notable contributions to The Kinks, has sadly passed away at the age of 75.
The legendary British rock ensemble conveyed the sad news through an Instagram tribute post on Friday, shortly after Gosling’s passing.
“We are profoundly saddened by the loss of John Gosling. Our heartfelt condolences go out to John’s family and wife,” the post conveyed. The tribute further included personal messages from each band member.
Lead guitarist Dave Davies expressed, “The passing of John Gosling deeply disheartens me. He was a friend and a significant creative force in Kinks music during his tenure with us. My deepest sympathies go to his family. He will forever hold a special place in my heart. An exceptional musician and an extraordinary individual.”
“A dear friend and collaborator has left us; he was a remarkable musician with an incredible sense of humor… qualities that endeared him to all of us in the band,” drummer Mick Avory added. “He leaves behind a treasure trove of joyful memories. May he rest in peace.”
Gosling initially became part of The Kinks, established in 1963, in 1970, impressing the band during auditions with his demo recordings of their chart-topping tracks, including ‘This Time Tomorrow‘ and ‘Powerman‘.
His significant debut and recording with the group were featured on their 1970 single ‘Lola‘, where Gosling’s piano melodies and backing vocals enriched the final mix of the song, which had already been penned.
He remained an integral part of the band for eight years, until his departure in 1978, subsequently succeeded by Ian Gibbons. In 1994, Gosling initiated the formation of The Kast Off Kinks, a band comprising former members who had contributed to The Kinks over various eras. Gosling retired from the band in 2008, per Entertainment Tonight.
The Kast Off Kinks also paid their respects to the accomplished musician, stating on their website: “The Kast Off Kinks are profoundly affected by the news of the passing of former keyboardist John ‘The Baptist’ Gosling,” and providing a link to a Facebook tribute page established to honor Gosling’s legacy.
