Probationary firefighter rescues elderly man from burning building on 4th shift after graduation

A probationary firefighter is receiving praise after he rescued an elderly man from a burning apartment late Saturday night.

The rookie firefighter, Darrell Johnson, was working his fourth shift since graduation when he responded to the call in the 1000 block of North Capitol Street in Northeast, D.C.

According to local reports, firefighters and EMS responded to a fire in a 12-story building.

While locating the flames, Johnson and fellow firefighter Vincent Cook, also found a victim.

“As we located the fire, we noticed there was a victim to the left of us,” Cook said. “My hook man, probationer Johnson, was actually the one who pointed him out.”

The two firefighters were able to rescue the man from the burning apartment. It was reported that he suffered serious injuries, though they were considered not life-threatening.

“It’s an awesome experience; it’s a rush for sure. One that you don’t see coming. You stick to your training… I felt down for what felt like a person; a body. I heard him holler out and Cook was extinguishing the fire at the same time and I jumped down, jumped on it, and we just pulled him out,” Johnson said in a video shared on the DC Fire and EMS Twitter account.

Imagine going into a fire only a few shifts after graduation and saving a life! That’s when you know you chose the right path in life.
